dear supervisor,

i am so friggin glad that you got to take a while year off to be with your first child. i am so happy for you that you could afford to not get paid for over 12 months. i am well aware that i will "never get this time back" with my first child. do you think i WANT to come back to work and be away from my baby?

i get paid in one day what it will cost us for an entire week in day care. so no, part time is not an option. and unlike you, who has been married to a CO for over 10 years, my DH and i are still struggling after less than one year of marriage, and we have bills to pay. so paying for health insurance while not collecting a paycheck is not an option for me, sorry.

yeah, i'll "think about it" - i'll think about it every day when i have to leave my baby at home and come into work to deal with the dregs of society. thanks. i'll make sure to "think about it" every single stinkin day.

Re: dear supervisor,

Chat Icon Chat Icon I feel you. The only reason I got to stay home with DS for as long as I did is because I got laid off when my maternity was over. It was a devastating financial blow. This time I am back to work at 8 weeks. You do what you have to. Chat Icon

So sorry, LB. Chat Icon Chat Icon

People really are idiots. NO ONE has a right to question your decisions. You are doing what is best for you and your family. THE END. You are already a wonderful mother.

OMG how insensitive!Chat Icon Chat Icon
I am so sorry your supervisor is so unrealistic-- i know there are mommies who would rather work than stay home, but I am not one of them. If finances alllowed it I'd be home with Chat Icon every single day til he started school Chat Icon
The whole setup just makes me want to move to Canada, you know, 1 year PAID maternity leave, STANDARD.

Re: dear supervisor,

That's terrible. This is one of the things I feel most guilty about also. My mom keeps mentioning how she stayed home with us until we were 10 and 12, but I just don't have that option. We can't afford our home on just one salary.

I kind of had a discussion like that as well. I told he when she finds me a $40K house, a $5K car, and gas for less than a dollar a gallon on LI, then I can stay home.

Ummmmm - Did your 'supervisor' ever take an HR course ?? B/c she should NOT be telling you that - 'friendly' or not with her, she's your boss, and that is an inappropriate conversation ..........

I was thinking the same thing...very inappropriate for her to discuss anything along these lines. Chat Icon

Re: dear supervisor,

thanks for all the support ladies - i am actually surprised that i didn't burst out crying right there in her office.

we are very friendly, it's just that type of work environment, but she is very opinionated (about everything, but especially parenting) and there's not a whole lot i can do about that.

i do agree with you, but it's the kind of work environment where i can't really complain about her - there is no such thing as anonymous since she only supervises 4 people.

if it was something more serious, i would talk to HR, believe me... but this was a situation where i know she was just trying to be motherly and helpful and it didn't work out that way.
