Re: Have you ever heard of this?

That's not right at all!

I'd call the CC company. Do you still have the CC receipt?

Re: Have you ever heard of this?

Is it a debit card? If it is, some cards add in a tip when they put the money on hold but when the charge actually clears through the account, it's for the correct amount.

Re: Have you ever heard of this?

some stores will charge you for paying "debit" only. It may be a $2 fee like using an ATM. But if you paid it as "Credit" since your debit has a Visa Logo it should not charge $2.

I think it happens because it's a debit card acting like a credit card. Since you aren't actually borrowing money but using money that's currently in the account, they put a hold on the amount and assume a tip.

Re: Have you ever heard of this?

I see what your saying... but a tip is not a must (although I personally would never stiff someone) You are not liable to paying it...so how they can do this...makes no sense!

Ill never forget a story someone told me:

She worked for Dave n Busters in Islandia... she was left no tip...so her manager says.... ummm... hows $10 sound??? and when they put through the bill... the put it in with a $10 tip....

You cant trust anyone!

Re: Have you ever heard of this?

they run the card, bring it back to your table for you to write in tip. Card is already ran through and approved. If your meal was 30.00, and you only had 31.00 on the card, it would go through, but at the end of the night, when server is entering cc tips, lets say you left 5.00, you only had 31.00 on card, so server won't get tipped.

When you run a tab at a bar, they ususally but a 100.00 hold on it atleast for 4 days.

Re: Have you ever heard of this?

Happens to me all the time. Called the bank and the restaurant/deli a few times and was told they automatically charge an extra 20% to make sure your card will be approved including the tip amount. Falls off in 3-4 days usually.

Re: Have you ever heard of this?

It's called a pre-auth. The pre-auth enough for the meal and tip. Then ones you sign they only officially charge what you wrote.

Yes, I heard of this. I think the restaurants do that because the charge is run through before the tip which a lot of people throw on the cc. It should reverse itself in a day or so.

I wonder if you can tell them that you will be leaving a cash tip to avoid that?

My dad mentioned this to me once, that restaurants have done that. It's tacky, IMO.
