OHSS and pregnancy

Hi Girls,

I had my transfer yesterday and am having some serious doubts about my decision. My doctor first recommended holding off my transfer and doing it next month with the ohss...I said i wasn't too happy with that plan lol...and didn't really take time to think about it..so than he advised putting one egg back because he said because i have ohss..that my pregnancy with twins (if that happens) would be dreadful..daily doctors visits, possible drainage of fluid, pain, bedrest..etc..

So, long story short..we did what we orginally planned..put two eggs back..
I feel like we made a very irrational decision.

Right now, I am extremely bloated, have pains, can't move...just complete torture..apparently with pregnancy it gets worse..and with twins it's even worse..

Please tell me i cand handle this...or if anyone has gone through this..please provide any kind of advice or suggestions to make this ohss better..

Thx so much!

Re: OHSS and pregnancy

The only thing you can do to make the OHSS better is the following:
Stay off your feet - DON'T go to work.
Drink lots of a 50/50 Gatorade/water mix
If you start to feel dizzy, nauseous or faint...call your RE immediately.

I have had severe OHSS and had to be drained, it's not as bad as you think.

The Dr. is right, if you get PG it will get worse because your HCG will go up and that creates the catalyst for OHSS. But, it should start to get better in the next few days...you'll know you are PG if it reappears. On a good note, statistically you are more likely to get PG if you have mild OHSS. And you will be able to handle it...it's uncomfortable, but even the draining wasn't that horrible. Just please don't let yourself get to a really bad point, I did and was admitted into the ER cuz I kept thinking I was going to be okay.

Good luck...I'm praying you only have a mild case and it doesn't get any worse.

Thanks for responding!

Can you tell me at what point did u go to the ER? Like last night, I had the worst shooting pains in my stomach and was very close to going. But, they subsided after 10 minutes or so..

Re: OHSS and pregnancy

I went back to my RE when I was having pains and trouble moving around...they put me on total bedrest for week. It was two days after my transfer.
That night, I started getting lightheaded and nauseous...it started about 6 p.m. and I was in touch with my RE but trying to wait it out and see if I would get better on my own. By 11:00 p.m. I was delirious (literally), short of breath and couldn't even stand on my own. My RE met me @ the ER and admitted me immediately.
Watch your weight gain...I gained 12 pounds in that one day...I had gained about 10 from retrieval to that morning. Total weight gain was 25 pounds in less than 5 days.

Re: OHSS and pregnancy

Thx Gertyrae! I am hoping this is a mild case also...it sure as hell feels severe though...

I go in tomorrow, so we will see what they say..honestly, I would love to get drained..does it have to be a severe case for that to happen?

Trust me, you do not want to be drained unless it's necessary. How much have you gained?

Re: OHSS and pregnancy

I have a mild case of it -- and it hasn't gone away yet! (I'm 8 weeks pg). I am extremely bloated, but the pain and horrible uncomfortable feeling has gone away (it took about 2 weeks) Eventually, the ovaries will drain....eventually.....Chat Icon

What do they do when they drain you? I have gained probably 7-8 pounds since my retrieval which was on Tuesday..

Re: OHSS and pregnancy

Yes, the severe uncomfortable feeling went away gradually, about 2 weeks after I got my BFP......I had a ovarian cyst last cycle that the doc aspirated, and believe me, you DON'T want to have it done unless you HAVE to....it hurts!!!!! (at least, it did for me!). That's why I just dealt with it.....My follicles are still the size of baseballs, but that will go away in time.

ETA: To drain you, they go up your hoo-ha with a needle, guided by ultrasound, and pop the ovary or ovaries. I've heard of other methods, where the needle is inserted into the abdomen also....

With me, they inserted the needle (a giant needle I might add) into my abdomen and drained a lovely 2 gallons out of my stomach.

Re: OHSS and pregnancy

I had OHSS on an injection/IUI cycle. If you notice nausea, loss of appetite, or difficulty breathing it's getting serious. The difficulty breathing is a big sign to head to the ER. Also monitor how much you are drinking and how much you are peeing. If you are retaining a lot of fluids and not peeing much that is also a warning sign. I also had painful leg cramps which I found out later could be a sign of dehydration or clotting blood. Luckily my case resolved within a week.

Re: OHSS and pregnancy

I had mild OHSS after my ER and they suggested the same things, but ultimately they left decision up to us. They did not push us to delay the transfer, but they definately gave us the pros of only putting one back. Like you, we decided to go with our original plan of taking our chances and putting two back. Luckily for me, my OHSS subsided after the ET. I did get PG with twins but lost one early on. However, it did not make my OHSS worse. For me, I was very strict about my intake/output, monitored my weight closely, and basically put myself on bedrest. Just be careful and if you don't feel right or the pain gets worse, head right to the ER. Hope you are able to avoid all of that and get a nice BFP in a few days Chat Icon
