Poll done on news 12

My agency just overswamped news 12 with "Yes" responses to this question. "would you be okay if they put a group home next door to you"? I was wondering what some of your responses are whether they be yes or no and why? My response is yes. The only one thing I would like them to change are the fire drills. I know this bc I have worked in residential settings and I know that it must **** for the neighbors. Otherwise, I am fully okay with these houses in my neighborhood.

Re: Poll done on news 12

Uhm, to be honest I don't know how happy I would be. Group homes who house....troubled teens? As long as the quality of life in the neighborhood didn't change I would not care.

Depends on how you define "group homes".

I worked in one for the developmentally disabled. It was all women aged 34-63. It would depend on what residents were and what type of supervision they were required to have.

Well, I assume you're talking about MR group homes (since that was the news report on News 12 I saw)? I wouldn't have a problem with it. One of my concerns would be the upkeep of the house (these people in Smithtown were talking about declining values). I'd probably also be a little concerned with employees and parking (hanging outside, smoking, breaks, too many cars, employees littering on my property, etc). I've worked in group homes for a few LI agencies and I've seen how some of the homes are kept and some problems that can arise. But ultimately, everyone needs a place to live, too, so why can't it be in my neighborhood?

Re: Poll done on news 12

My parents have a group home on their block. Its been there for about 5 years now. The whole neighborhood protested it. They had the same worries as npbride listed.

I can say that the house is kept beautifully (at least from the outside), there are a lot of vans and cars parked there, and the buses take up the whole street when using the lift to board someone.

A lot of people put their houses up for sale when the home was approved...

Actually its funny that you should mention staff. I would probably be more scared that staff would be throwing cigs and sitting on their cell phones on the front lawn. I have to admit, I remember working in these homes when i was younger, my co workers sat outside and probably didnt care much about the neighbors. I dont know if I would love that if I was a homeowner but if that is the major problem to adress that it is staff and not the clients then maybe thats a factor for OMRDD to put in their regulations when purchasing residences.

They opened one many years ago in my parents area and I went to a town meeting about it for them when they were out of town. Most of the neighborhood was against it for some of the reasons listed. Another consideration, however was that the neighborhood felt that they were being asked to accommodate more than their share of these residences. There were already several groups homes and they thought it would be fair to ask one of the neighboring communities that had none to accommodate them.

Ultimately, it opened and I read recently that they house mentally ill patients and one of the residents was stabbed by another resident. This is what people fear in their neighborhood. So, I agree with other posters that it depends on what type of residence it is and how it will be maintained and managed.

I feel like I practically live across the street from one now. Chat Icon There is at least one teenager in that house and his friends are out in front of the house, making a racket. There are always beer bottles on my lawn. Chat Icon

Then again, there was a small group home around the block from me when I was growing up. It was very quiet, well-kept, it was all kids and they seemed nice. My mom had no qualms about letting me ride my bike past (my best friend lived across the street.) I once fell off my bike in front of the house and two of the kids helped me get back to my house. So I guess it depends.

Re: Poll done on news 12

after reading some of the answers, I was wondering ...is it really about the MR clients or is it ore about the staff? I have to say that alot of the answers seem to have to do with staff related issues as far as causing a racket. I personally would welcome a MR group home into my neighborhood. I also am hearing alot about other types of group homes which is partially my fault because I didnt state my question correctly at first. Getting back to my original question, if it werent a mental health related home and was MR would you welcome these clients?

I absolutely agree and that is why I believe that if staff is the only problem...then OMRDD needs to account for that and not have this kind of stuff happening. Maybe it means using only the backyard for smoking or not being outside on shift. It also might mean making longer driveways so that vans arent all over the street.

very true!
But not just OMRDD but all the private agencies as well...since they are just as responsible...

It is actually TRULY SAD that this is a concern!

Re: Poll done on news 12

I would be concerened. I know when the staff and residents are out of their element it's a different thing, but I worked at a supermarket where the houses would come with 2 or 3 staff, and then maybe 4 or 5 of the residents to go shopping and one time a resident wasn't being watched properly, and slammed a shopping cart into the back of an older woman.

My biggest concert would be something like that happening. The residents not being properly watched and having them do things which could harm others.
