Re: Going natural vs getting epi

you'll know what to do when you're in the middle of labor. it'll be an easy decision for you either way when you see how you're handling the pain. there was no chance in h ell that i could go another minute without the epidural--i was SCREAMING in pain. and i pushed for 5 hours after 12 initial hours of labor--for me it wasn't an option not to get one. but other people labor for 5 minutes.

regarding a catheter--i don't know why you're worried about that! it's not a permanent one--they "attach" it for a few minutes and then take it out. you don't feel ANYTHING. you are numb (if you have the epidural). there's no pain from it and no lasting issues

Re: Going natural vs getting epi

I'll go in with an open mind, but since I have a low tolerance for pain, I wouldn't be surprised if I get an epidural.

I got the epidural when I had my DD and will do the same this time around. I never felt the catheter go in or come out (it was put in after I got the epi). My recovery was great too. Very minimal pain.

I had epis both times and had quick and easy births and recovery was a breeze. All I needed was some advil for the dull pain....never even filled the vicodin script they gave me

This is similar to my experience except I had an elective c-section. I never had more than motrin (after they took me off the morpine 24 hours after delivery) and I will say that like a pp, the worst part for me was the IV. Never felt the catheter in or out, the Spinal was like a pinch but that IV was painful!

I was going to go natural but my pain was horrible. i got the epi and wow what a difference.

I was so relieved.

The catheter i didnt even notice it in and then taken out.. they take it out prior to pushing..

you have to go with your gut and see how much pain you can take.

Every woman is different and every delivery is different. Some are easy and some are difficult. I ALWAYS wanted to have the epi but it wore off at about the last hour. For me, the pain was absolutely unbearable. I have an extremely high threshold for pain but I had back labor and my contractions were coming every 30 seconds. And by the end I was crying and vomiting and begging for a c-section.

I ended up with a c-section and I did not even take pain meds after because my recovery was so easy. Thank goodness when I have my next I will have a scheduled c because I can still remember the pain quite vividly.

I don't mean to scare anyone because it was just MY experience. But I think you have to go into it without too many preconceived notions and be ready to roll with the punches cause anything can happen.
