RE? what do they do?

I am sure this was asked before, but can someone tell me what exactly a RE does and who should see one?

Re: RE? what do they do?

A medical endocrinologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and management of hormonal conditions. Endocrinologists usually have background training in one of a number of different medical fields such as pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and oncology. (All medical endocrinologists have an M.D. or an analogous medical degree and some also have a Ph.D. or another advanced science degree.)

Re: RE? what do they do?

i go to a regular endo. for my non working thyroid - but if my fertility issues had been worse or not addressed by my ob ( who is also a licensed RE) i would have had to go elsewhere

Re: RE? what do they do?

ITA with PP about what they do.

Most recommend seeing an RE if you are over 35 and have been trying for 6+ months, or under 35 and have been trying 12+ months.

You also might want to see one if you have any factors that might make TTC difficult, like PCOS, irregular cycles, thyroid problems, etc.

Other women see one because they have a gut feeling that something is wrong, and REs are specialists in fertility - above and beyond ob/gyns.

Re: RE? what do they do?

RE's focus on any and all problems that you are having with TTC. I have EXTREMELY irregular cycles and I don't always ovulate so I went to an RE so they can figure out what was wrong and help me conceive without just jumping to Clomid which is what my OB/GYN wanted to do and I wanted to avoid. With the RE they monitor you very closely with sono's and bloodwork and try to figure out the best course of action to help you get pregnant. Luckily for me after only 4 months with the RE and taking just Metformin to try and regulate my cycles I was able to ovulate on my own and along with lots of BD'ing I also had an IUI and got pregnant. (I am due in less than 9 weeks!! Chat Icon ) Going to an RE was the BEST, BEST thing I ever did and I highly recommend if you have any fertility issues to skip over your regular GYN and head to an RE. Their only focus is to get you pregnant and they are trained to figure out your problem and choose the best course of action. I came across this explanation of an RE's job below. Hope it helps and good luck to you too!! Chat Icon

Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE)

If you are currently seeing your general practitioner or obstetrician/gynecologist for help with your infertility, you may be interested in taking the next step forward with your fertility treatments. Many couples who are struggling with infertility find that choosing to see a reproductive endocrinologist helps them to increase their chances of conceiving. Reproductive endocrinologists have special training that enables them to give you the treatment and attention that you need when you are facing fertility issues.
