Folic Acid

Right I now I take a regular OTC prenatal vitamin, but my friends doctors recomend taking an extra Folic Acid vitamin. Should I do that too? Can you take too much folic acid? Thanks!

Re: Folic Acid

What is the dose in your OTC prenatal? My prescription prenatal has 1mg of FA in it.

I believe OTC prenatal generally have lower FA in them than a prescription prenatal.

That's about normal. I think the FDA wants pg women to take at least 400 mcg a day, so you are above that. Like I said, my prescrip prenatal has 1mg of FA in it. Usually drs will only tell women with a history of certain disorders or a family member with a history of a neural tube defect to increase the FA beyond the prenatal.

Are any of these risks to you? Please discuss your needs with your OB. HTH

Re: Folic Acid

Every woman's doctor will tell them something different because every woman has very different needs.

Neither 400 nor 800mcg of folic acid would ever be enough for me. I have malaborption issues from weight loss surgery and require MORE than the average person. The best thing for you to do is ask your OB and possibly confer with your PCP in the event that you have any other issues your OB may not be privy to. Do not rely on what "everyone else" does.
