I just found a ferret!!!
We were driving home on Elwood road in Northport. I saw a man on the road trying to wave cars around, and there was an animal he was trying to redirect. I knew right away it was a ferret - I used to have 2 for years. I could tell the poor thing was scared but very healthy. Without even thinking I swept it up and he was sooo friendly. He nuzzled into me, so obviously he had a good history with people. this ferret looks healthy and well fed, and very social. I'm not sure f he was abandoned or maybe he wandered off - what should I do????
ETA I have him in my carrying crate with blankets and water. DH is out getting cat food for now- its not the best for ferrets but they can eat it for a day or two. I'm already in love with him but DH said he doesn't want to keep it, which I understand. I am trying to keep Cailen away for now until I know he's healthy....

So funny - Cailen was in the back of the car - all of a sudden he sees me come back in with this and he starts saying, "HI!!! Doggy!!! HIiiiii!!! Doggy!!!"

aww. I feel bad for the poor thing. Its going to be very hard to locate the owners. Maybe try to put an ad on craigslist? and then if anyone calls have them explain to you what it looks like? maybe a marking or something.
I hope you keep him/her if you can't find its home, you seem like your in love with it already

OMG I am so in love with her... she really, really seems so comfortable and happy here. She is the sweetest ferret I have ever seen - besides the 2 I had. But mine were so sweet because I raised them with a lot of love. She clearly was loved, which makes me wonder if maybe she just got out. I had a long talk with DH. He said its up to me. We already decided to adopt a cat, so he said we could keep her instead of getting a cat. I really thought long and hard. Ferrets are very high maintenance. To raise them right they need a lot more than I think I think I can give. My home is not "ferret proof" which could be dangerous for her. Cailen is always falling, and if he falls on her he will crush her. He clearly loves her as well - he held her the right way immediately, which I was shocked by. But, I came to the decision that she needs a home with someone who can be the perfect ferret mommy/daddy. I am i tears because I have to say I rarely get this love at first sight, and I felt this way when I first met my cat (of 13 yrs) and my ferrets. She feels so right with me, but because I feel this way I have to be committed to finding her the right home. I spoke to Commack emergency hospital. i could have dropped her off tonight, but I wanted this night with her just so she can feel safe. Tomorrow morning I will drop her off. They will try and find her family. If they can't be found, then she will go to an adoption agency. i am going to leave my information and let them know I would consider adopting her f they cannot find a home for her. Then I'll know she was meant to be and we will think about it again.
I was meant to find her tonight. the guy who stopped the cars told me she almost got hit. He wouldn't pick her up - he tried to block her with his foot to get her off the road, but he saved her life too. If I didnt grab her no one would have. So I was meant to be there at that moment....
I'm so sad though...

Thanks! I called them - I used to know nina - one of my ferrets I adopted from AFC and I used to bring my ferrets to their GTGs all the time!!!

that was so nice of you to help her! it sounds like she escaped from her home.....they are quite the escape artists! below is the info of the vet i use for my 2 ferrets. they may be able to help as well.

We had 3 ferrets and now have 2. Dont worry about if Cailen falls on the ferret, DH has actually sat on one of our ferrets by accident. He thought he was sitting on my foot and all 275lbs of him sat on the 3 lb ferret.  The ferret went a little limp and we took him to the vet and the vet said he was fine. Ferret was just in a bit of shock that a 275 lb man just sat on him.
Ferrets are definately the escape artists. Our 2 are in their cage. We take them out at night to run around. Our one ferret we nick named him jail break because one night he actually got out of his cage. He climbed into the bed and was sitting on DH's chest. He also likes to jump out of his cage when we open the door. It's possible the owners of this little one may have been doing something and since ferrets are rather quick and small she may have gotten out. So many times I thought I lost my white ferret because he used to get into the laundry basket and blend in with the white clothes. I would go into major OCD when I was doing laundry.
If you need help with the ferret or finding a shelter for it, a dear friend of DH works in a no kill animal shelter and can help you find a home for the ferret if you can't keep her.

Sweet story, that ferret was meant to be in your hands.
I'd put an ad in Craigslist but no pics. Keep it simple and ask the callers to identify markings on the ferret.
For what it's worth, Cailen can fall on a cat too. (My cousin's daughter fell on their cat and killed it.) If no one responds to the ad in a week, I'd keep him. He sounds like a lovely animal and happy to be with you.
