So you're just picking up the food and that's it? I don't think I would put a tip in. Is it possible that it's the same form that is used for table service, and that's why there is a space for that?

This is how much I live in the boonies now- there is next to NO good take-out where I lived. Whitestone had so much good take-out. Chat Icon

I do tip when I pick up Sushi and then I tip again at bar while I'm waiting for my food. But that's because I'm a regular and they always give me free beer and Sake bombs.

Other than that, no I don't usually tip but yes, like you said, I do feel weird. Chat Icon

ETA: I also think it's weird that I feel more obligated to put a tip in this way than when they just put a jar out.

I don't tip when I pick up. In a restaurant you are tipping the waitress for the service. When there is no waitress, and no service, no tip.

I would feel weird too, but I can't see how one would be expected. Unless you are that much of a regular and/or they go out of their way for you.

I always tip when I pick up take out. Having been a waitress and having packed up my fair share of orders, I know how much time it takes to get an order ready. I also know that the waitress/waiter only makes about 2.50 an hour and relies on tips to make a living.

Yes, I always tip regardless of how I pay. I usually tip between 10-15%

ETA: Preparing a take out order is service. No, not to the extent of table service, but it is indeed service.

Re: Tip spinoff

I don't tip when I'm just picking up.........but I definately tip when eating at the restaurant. Waiters and waitresses don't make alot of $ to begin with and if they are really good I tip them good.

Re: Tip spinoff

I do if it is a restaurant, and the bartender had to put it together...or if the host had to get it for me, usually just 2.00 or 3.00 though

No, not at all BUT I once saw something so screwed up. I used to take a handicapped child to a famous coffee shop weekly. They began giving her free drinks and in turn I would throw them the 4 bucks in the jar. From that day forward what do you think happened???? They kept giving her free drinks. The tip jar became their $ while the famous coffee shop chain lost $.

Re: Tip spinoff

If I go to a place that does the carside to go type thing and a person has to come to my car, I tip. Not as much as I'd tip a waiter or a waitress, but I do tip. If it's a place I walk into to pick food up, then I don't tip.
