My dad needs some help & I am all out of resources

He just got a Brand New Dell. He has speakers on his monitor along with Dell surround sound. The surround sound is working when you put a DVD in & play it. When you listen to music from IE, it is only coming out of the speakers on the monitor.

What is causing this???
