I mean for god sake, DH has to buy his own handcuffs, guns, he even bought a new vest which was over $1,000 b/c the vest he had was in such bad shape. The police department only provided him with a new vest after 6 years...
That is really sad

who would take such a dangerous job at $35k let alone $25k!!!!!!! how can you live on that around here?
agreed. Its sad that I make more money that a some police officers and I sit at a desk all day. Safe.

NYC cops and teachers are underpaid most likely because of the city's defecit. This is a city that's closing down firehouses.
But the top pay for the NYFD is $72k....right now the NYPD top pay is only $59k and was just bumped up to $65k with this new contract. Why is there or why should there be a difference in salary, KWIM.
The last FDNY contract that was ratified in 2007 brought top pay to $68,475 and the probies wages went from $25,100 to $36,400
It's shameful what the probies make

It really is a shame. I really feel for the men and women that are entering the academy - the job has changed dramatically and they are going to find themselves a little jaded after too short a time. Even if you take the money out of the equation for a minute - they simply don't have the support of the city, the mayor, the voters. The cops will continue to get slapped in the face, and kicked in the shins. Officers are leaving the city in droves - as well they should. I am noticing more and more that they are not even really considered people to the majority and they are an expendable expense.

My DH is not happy with the new contract at all. They think that they are doing them justice by giving them a raise, but they have to do so many givebacks, like going to the range on their days off! I agree with what Jellybean said about the lack of respect. This is what DH complains about all of the time. The officers are treated like garbage by everyone, especially when you work in the bad precincts like he does.

My brother is one of those who is going into the academy in the summer because this is his DREAM! He could care less about the pay, the danger or anything else. We have prayed he would change his mind but just like my dad and uncle, its his passion. Insane!
many of us understand his way of thinking... i was there 5 years ago, it was all i ever wanted to do. best of luck to him, but i guarantee his opinion will change in a very short time.

That's exactly what happened with the teachers' contract 2 years ago. Yes, we got a raise that moved up salaries more, but we gave time. A LOT of time. The new contracts are deceiving b/c a lot of people think they are making more money. It's not. And when a new mayor comes in, it is going nto be sooooo hard to reverse what this one started. Basically, it's a sin what NYC does to its workers.
