Anyone ever lose a toenail??
So I injured my big toe nail 5 months ago from wearing shoes that were too tight. It turned all black and blue under the nail and now the nail is dead and about to fall off.
I have a new nail underneath it- growing in- but S L O W L Y.
So anyway, the dead nail is nasty and about to fall off...however, the new nail is not nearly long enough yet- all this in the HEIGHT of summer/sandal season.
My question- can I get a silk wrap or something on my toe? Has anyone done this before? My concern is that the new nail is very tiny and there isn't much for the wrap to grab on to.
Plus I don't want to do anything to jeopordize the health of the new nail growing in... however- I cannot go a whole summer if god forbid this thing falls off!
HELP!!!

Re: Anyone ever lose a toenail??
I would not put anything on it.
I had 3 partial toenail removal (on the same toenail) in October. The nail did not fail but it's ugly. A new nail is growing but VERY slowly. I dread the open toe shoes too. I decided to put a bandaid on it when I go out so it does not look bad.

Re: Anyone ever lose a toenail??
I have one now...only cause it broke and was short as well and I couldnt take wearing sandals with THAT toe.
The wrap will grow out with your nail and then you can take the wrap off, if needed.
Just be on top of the nail....esp in summer with lots of water, u know a fungus.
But I think you will be ok since I have done this before and no probs, just a normal looking toenail

Re: Anyone ever lose a toenail??
I had this happen to my big toenail a few years ago. By the time it was May there was only a small portion on the bed. So I honestly just had them paint the little nail and a little above the nail (the actual skin). I know it sounds crazy but really you could barely tell from afar.

Re: Anyone ever lose a toenail??
Thanks ladies! Glad to see I am not alone in this.
I am just worried because I can totally rip the old nail off right now...it's like a loose tooth!
But I'm scared too... because it's sandal season!
Of course this coudln't happen in October!!!

Re: Anyone ever lose a toenail??
Being a runner, I have lost many toe nails during my training. I would not put a wrap on the new nail. I know the look is dreadful right now, but IMO keep that nail as healthy as possible...I wouldn't want to expose it to the glue and chemicals that come with a wrap.
I know it stinks and takes forever to grow, but it will!

Re: Anyone ever lose a toenail??
I lost my toenail when I tripped over a bump in the sidewalk. It took about 8 months to grow back and TBH, I wouldn't put anything on it. It sucks, but no one really will notice. I also found that the new toenail never really grows back exactly like the other one. Mine has ridges in it and I still get ingrown toenails from it. It has been a year and a half since I lost it.

Re: Anyone ever lose a toenail??
I dropped a heavy sconce on my flip flopped foot last year in TJ Max. (It is really hard to hold in the yelps when you are alone in public!) Anyway, my big toenail hasn't been the same since. It breaks half way down the nail. The last girl who did my pedi just glued it (that only lasted a couple of days). I just got a silk wrap on it and it looks so much better! However, since yours is so small maybe you should wait a little.

Re: Anyone ever lose a toenail??
I did!
Someoen stomped on my foot in a club and then I lost my big toenail.
Just as you described, the old one started loosening as the small baby one was underneath. It did take mths to grow...but I just put a bandaid over it when wearing sandals.
Then when it was tiny enough, I started painting it with a darker nail color and painted my skin as well, to disguise the tiny size of it. Looked pretty good, hard to tell it was half nail and half skin!!!
I did ask the nail salon if they could do a "toenail extension" LOL< but I didn't want to risk an infection or damage to the new, thin, weak toenail. Came back as good as it was though...
