Dads at Brestfeeding course?

Did you take or do you think your DH should come with you to this?
I have a BF course next week and Dh is registered with me as a couple but DH insits men don't go to that and he will only go to the baby care course.
Do you think he should go? I don't want to drag him there if no other men are there...any thoughts???

Re: Dads at Brestfeeding course?

I am still on the fence about BFing though I would like to try. I signed up for the cours as a way to learn exactly what type of commitment it will be for me physically and personally.

My DH would seriously like for me to breastfeed. I never really considered it until I was pregnant. My feelins is if this is something HE REALLY wants, then he REALLY needs to come with me.

I saw a 10 minute schpiel from a lactation consultant at an event not too long ago. This particular consultant expressed that ideally, the mother should feed from the breast when she can and combine that with pumping so that the father can ALSO participate in feeding the child. I agree.

So basically, my DH WILL be coming with me to the class.

Re: Dads at Brestfeeding course?

When I signed up for the class, the coordinator suggested I bring DH or someone else. She did say most dad's come to the class. DH is coming with me - mine is in June.

We're taking the BF class next week at the hospital and I plan to bring DH. I wonder if we will be at the same class!

Re: Dads at Brestfeeding course?

My hospital strongly recommends that the mother's partner (typically DH or BF) attend with her. Everyone in my class had their hubby with her. They feel that there is a greater chance of success with BF if you have a person there to support you. Also, it is very likely that a preggo will not remember half of what they are told so this should help! Chat Icon

My DH went and I would say 80% of the women had partners with them.

I went with a preggo girlfriend and left DH at home. There were other DH's there though. They sent us home with a gift bag - nursing shall, book, nursing pads and a DVD. He watched the DVD with me and that showed proper latching and some other tips. I think he knows more than most Dads just from that!

Re: Dads at Brestfeeding course?

DH came with me and I was very glad he did. It helped me a lot after the baby was born because he could remind me of things that I learned and might have forgotten. To me him going with me was a tremendous support and I would recommend everyone bring their DH with them.

Re: Dads at Brestfeeding course?

I'm not taking and BFing classes. But I would think it would be beneficial to have him there. 4 ears and eyes are better than 2. And he may even remember some pointers you forget when the time comes.

Anyone than can be a second set of eyes and ears and be supportive. It is so hard in the beginning. You will need people cheering you on!
Moms are great for this too!

I think it's really important to bring DH. Breastfeeding can be hard early on and it is really important to have your husband's support. The class will help him understand the important reasons for breastfeeding and how he can help make it easier for you.

Re: Dads at Brestfeeding course?

I plan on taking DH to my BF course when I go. I need him to be another set of ears since I have such preggo brain lately! Chat Icon Not to mention, as Leslie said, I expect DH to feed our kid once I am able to start pumping so I wanna make sure he is a part of the total BF experience. Chat Icon
