Gonal-F and OHSS
I am starting gonal-f tonight at 37.5iu. They are starting me "low and slow" as to avoid OHSS.
What are possible side effects of gonal-f and is there any way to avoid OHSS? Drinking lots of fluids, etc.?

Re: Gonal-F and OHSS
That is a low dose. Are you susepticle (sp) to OHSS?
My first IVF cycle I was on 300IU for the first 4 days then moved up to 450IU for the duration of my stim cycle. This IVF cycle, they started me right out at 450IU.
ETA: Definately increase your fluid intake. What also worked for me to keep the bloat away was moderate excercise (brisk walking). I walked about 2.5-3 miles every other day. I think it really helped.

Re: Gonal-F and OHSS
You are on a very low dose. I developed OHSS on 125 iu after 8 days of stimming. The warning sign was that my estrogen shot up to fast. I also ended up pg but had a m/c and I was told that OHSS is worsened by pregnancy.

Re: Gonal-F and OHSS
Do you have a history of OHSS?
I know that when I start gonal-f next week, they are starting me at 225 combined with 75 of Repronex, which seems really high compared to you (and others)! I ovulate on my own and have been pg 3 times, so I have no idea how they arrived at this number!
I am freaking out about this possibility, especially since it seems that many ladies on here have had it.
I asked my RE last week when I saw him for my water sono if I should be exercising during the stim period and he didn't seem too thrilled with the idea. He told me to mainly relax and take care of myself - that it would get uncomfortable at a certain point.
Guess I'm just going to drink water and keep my fingers crossed!!

Re: Gonal-F and OHSS
The doctor is being cautious - He wants to go "low and slow". It might mean taking injections for a longer period time (I don't ovulate on my own, and progress slowly). I am going in on Thursday to see if I am progressing.

Re: Gonal-F and OHSS
I started out at 75iu when I first used the drugs, then they increased me.
My RE doesn't want me doing bouncing or any exercise that is strenuous. But, walking and yoga they say was fine.
I didn't really exercise last cycle (yoga on my own occasionally to keep myself calm, I wanted to be a yoga instructor once so I can do my own self class). But, drank a ton of water, i mean a ton, and forced down Gatorade (I was able to tolerate the lemon flavor one). I do plan on walking this cycle. I also went to acupuncture and i think that helps too.

Bumping....
Anyone know why water and gatorade help while you are stimming? Does it help avoid OHSS?

When I ended up with OHSS I was told to drink lots of fluids because it puts you at risk for dehydration.

same here. gatorade has electrolytes and you want to keep your body well hydrated (as well as going to the bathroom more- to get it out of your system) - which is then replaced by the new water/gatorade going in... (hope that made sense)

It doesn't help avoid OHSS, it just helps to flush your system better. Don't drink straight Gatorade, you should do about a 50/50 mix. What happens with OHSS is that if you produce a lot of follicles and they retrieve a lot of eggs, those empty follicles sort of collect water. In a person who only produced 3/4 eggs there isn't too much of an issue, but if you have PCOS you can make much more than that. As those empty follies collect water, they make your ovaries swell and the water sort of spills out into your abdomen...this is what causes the bloating. There is no way to truly tell if someone is going to hyperstim until the last few days before trigger - and the trigger is what sets it off because the eggs are released. That was why MrsMessina's Dr. cancelled her cycle last month - no trigger, no released eggs, no OHSS.
Hope to help.
