I think he was trying to see if Locke could identify things from his future ... indicating he could time travel??
DH said that the test was similar to what they give the next Dali Lama to see if they can identify their belongings from the past life.
I could swear John has used a knife in the past maybe thats why he failed. Last nights episode was spooky to me! How could Richard be there at John's birth!? And how are they going to move the island? Crazy!
The correct choice (from Richard's perspective) would have been the book - that's the book that housed the tape that Eko presented to Locke in season 2 (I just watched that episode on DVD the other night - the one called "What Kate Did").
John has used the knife. But in choosing the knife, he sort of chose an alternate future - if that makes sense.
