What are the pros and cons of clomid
Dh and i are trying to decide if we should start clomid this cycle with RE or wait untill next cycle. what are the pros and cons? does anyone know what the percentage of multiples is? Are there any birth defects associated with this medication? Dr. told us it does tend to make you very emotional.

Re: What are the pros and cons of clomid
Off the top of my head, (I was researching it last night and posted on someone's thread over on TTC as my response) the chance of multiples on clomid is 10%. It can make you emotional (as can IF by itself) and the biggest complaint I had while on it was the hot flashes... UGH!!! To my knowledge there are no birth defects... they'll probably start you out on the lowest dose, which is 50. I would find out what the dr has in mind for you for a game plan... b/c you will definitely need to be monitored while on it. GL!

Re: What are the pros and cons of clomid
Clomid has some annoying side effects, but they are tolerable. They seem to get worse the longer you take it. I got hot flashes (especially night sweats), dizziness, and some funky vision stuff.
The pros are that it does make MANY women ovulate, you take it orally (instead of with a needle) and its inexpensive.
I guess I am emotional on it. I have been taking so much stuff I never know what to blame my emotions on
Good luck!

Great question! We are trying to make the same decision.

Re: What are the pros and cons of clomid
Some people don't react well to Clomid, myself included. I have no problems ovulating, but my RE put me on Clomid to up our chances for our IUI. Turns out though, the Clomid backfired and caused me to have a totally dysfunctional cycle, so that month was a total bust. We're trying a higher dose next month and if that doesn't work, straight to injectables.

HOT FLASHES!!!
It can also thin out your lining over time and cause hostile cervical mucous. I would think IUI would work best with clomid to really up your chances a notch

Re: What are the pros and cons of clomid
Clomid has side effects, I won't lie. It made me an emotional basket case. It can thin your lining and dry up CM which is why many RE's combine it with IUI. The chance of multiples with clomid is about 10%. There is no connection between Clomid and birth defects that I know of. You should be monitored with sonogram and bloodwork while on Clomid.

Re: What are the pros and cons of clomid
Hi there - why are u being put on clomid? Irregular cycles? if ur cycles are regular would u ever consider trying natural IUI (w/out clomid) and then if that doesnt work add clomid to the mix? I did 3 natural IUI's and got pregnant on number 3.
