Placenta Previa?

My sister is PG with her 5th baby. She just found out that she has full placenta previa.

I was just wondering if anyone has this and what your dr has said to you about bed rest and birthing options.

TIA!!!!

Re: Placenta Previa?

from what i have red with full placenta previa, she *should* be on full bed and pelvic rest and unless the placenta moves up all the way, she will hae to have a c-section.

Re: Placenta Previa?

If it is full previa then there is no option but a c-section.

Re: Placenta Previa?

From what I've heard/read bedrest is a must because there is a chance as the uterus grows and stretches the placenta could move up.

If it doesn't move up, or up enough, c-section is the only option for birth.

Re: Placenta Previa?

When I was pregnant w/Hayley I had partial previa. No heavy lifting, no sex, no exercising. If it didn't move it would mean c-section.

I ended up with a c-section anyway but not because the placenta didn't move. It did move up but the placenta was also tearing away from the uterus and ended up having an emergency c-section at 35 weeks because I was starting to have an abruption.

Exactly! I had low lying placenta and the doctors told me that if i had placenta previa, this was the outcome.

Re: Placenta Previa?

Thanks everyone!

My sister is having a lot of anxiety about it. She's surprised after having 4 boys with their average weight being about 9lbs and she pops them out with no epidural and no episiotomy, she's just freaking out about a c-section. I had one, I told her it's not so bad, but she's not listening to me! I thought if I got some insight into it from you ladies I could present her with some more info.

I appreciate it very much!Chat Icon

Re: Placenta Previa?

i had placenta previa during my first trimester... my dr said to just take it easy and no sex... he said most times it shifts... if it dosnt, then c-section was the option and possible bed rest once i am further along... since then it has started to shift, but it is still really low, so they check on it often with sonos...

Re: Placenta Previa?

Complete previa definately means a c-section. I know sometimes the placenta can move, but if it continues to cover the cervix (which is what previa is) a c-section is a must, otherwise the mother will hemmorage when she begins to dialate.

My friend had this and was in the hospital for a few months before her c-section -- they were terrified she would start to dialate and hemmorage before she made it to the hospital.

I also had a friend with partial previa (placenta partially covering the cervix) she also had a c-section, but was not in the hospital before since the placenta was only partially covering the cervix.

I don't know how far along she is and the placenta often will move. If it stays where it is, though, she'll need a c-section.
