Im so upset!

Sorry this is a long one. My stepdaughter has ADD. She was on medicine last year and did great in school. We decided to take her off of the med beacuse she wasnt gaining any weight, etc. One of the side effects.
So this year is 4th grade, really hard for the kids, and she was having a really hard time with it, so we decided to get her re-evaluated from the neurologist. The Dr recommeded putting her back on the med but on a very low dose since she had side effects. That was 2 weeks ago, I filled the prescription, Fast forward to today. The pharmacy calls me to ask what color the medicine is because there was a mix up with the manufacturer. Well I get all upset on the phone, what do you mean a MIX UP. So the lady asks me if the pills are blue, NO they are not, so I said why?? Did you give me the wrong med> She said well it isnt much of a difference between them, So she tells me to bring them in. Ok 2 weeks have gone buy and you tell me that because you did inventory you noticed that this is missing. So I hang up with her and of course no Im freaking out, She claimed that she didnt have our phone number so she has been trying to call my husbands Ex wife, (Sidney's Mom). Sidney lives with us, Hello why wouldnt you contact the DR or even our Insurance company. Ok So now Im thinking about this, The first day I gave her the medicine, Her lips were extremely chapped, I mean BLUE. She is complaining of stomack cramps, always in the bathroom, Cant eat, overly sensative, Last night she drove us crazy, we couldnt figure out what was wrong with her. So I come home and look at the bottle, Prescribed 15mg she was given 30mg. Says it right on the pills. That is a huge differnce for a 10 year old that only weighs 50lbs. I dont know what to do. Im so upset that this pharmacy can make a mistake like that, this med is a controlled substance and they are different colors for different strengths. I feel so guilty for even giving her the stupid meds. What should we do.

HOLY SH$t i would sue!!!!!! thank god shes ok. that was a bad mess up on their part!!!! i would take her to the doctor and have her checked out. sorry about this

OMG! That is absolutely horrible. I cannot imagine what you are even feeling right now, OR your poor step daughter. I do not remember who you need to call, I am drawing a blank, but I am SURE someone on here will know. Good luck and make sure to pursue this relentlessly!

Well I called the Dr. right away and she said not to give her the 30 mg . To wait 10 days for her body to get back to normal and then put her back on the 15mg. I dont want to do that now. I feel so bad, When we came home I made dinner and she told me that she cant eat and when she takes a bite she has to go to the bathroom. I just feel so bad and I cant tell her why she feels this way.

I agree, I would not tell her what is going on. You do not want her to feel like she cannot trust doctors. This is an absolutely terrible thing, but please don't blame yourself. We trust our pharmacists, but I guess we ALL need to really look at our pills closely. I am just thankful that your step-daughter is ok.

aww i am sorry. that is the pharmacy's fault I agree i would definetely sue! goodluck i hope your step daughter feels better the pharmacy overdosed her"BigTime". here are some hugs!

i would be livid!!!!! Giving children meds is hard enough (my son is 10 and has add) and is on meds also

I would flush the pill out of her body by using nothing but alot of water the next few days. I would then call BBB report this pharmacy, call the newspaper and sue there A@@ off. Are they kidding? couldnt reach you? OMG! Then when all is said and done I would thank God that nothing more serious happened from this experience.

Thank you girls. Yeah I am definetly flushing it out of her system. Its funny when my DH got the call he said you see that little pharmacy you go too. It wasnt the little guy, it was the chain store. I trust the little guy, whenever I go in there he tells me how to take my medication, etc. But he didnt have this medicine nad he would have to order it and I needed it for school so I went the the big store. No some of my coworkers were telling me horror stories about the people that work there.

I am so sorry this happened to you. I hope your stepdaughter gets better. I cannot believe it was a chain store, thats scary.
My parents stick with a "little pharmacy" and the pharmacist knows my mother by name!
Hmmm..gets me to thinking, maybe I should switch to her pharmacy..
Anyway, I would definitley contact someone and try to be "compensated'..I would definitley sue...Your poor little girl. Hope she gets better soon!

I think it was a great idea that you brought yoru step daughter to the Docs.

Did you ask him the difference between the meds?
What effects it could have?

If they are in the same family then i am sure she will be ok. Just because on brand of drug is 30mg doesn't mean it is stronger than another brand of drug at 15 mg....

I dont have any advice besides switch pharmacies so they cant do it again. Poor little girl

this happened to my grandmother. She noticed right away that the wrong meds were dispensed and she didn't take any of the pills.

the drug store corrected the prescription and paid her $300 to NOT initiate any actions against them.

$300... This is my niece! I am Karen's sister. If anything would have happened to her....................... I get choked up even thinking about it. SUE SUE SUE!

What a horrible story I can only say that at least your stepdaughter seems okay. My thoughts are with you.

This is not acceptable especially when dealing with a child. I had problems with getting someone else's medication (same name different person) from CVS one time and then they tried to do it 3-4 times but luckily after the first time I checked carefully before leaving the store.
