Spin-off to Pre-natal Vitamins
After my ovarian surgery in May, DH and I will start TTC. A few questions re: pre-natal vitamins:
1. Do you need a prescription for these?
2. If not, what ones that are over-the-counter do you ladies recommend? What combination of vitamins?
3. How long before TTC should you be on them?
4. Do you change the type of vitamin(s) you take once you get pregnant?
TIA!!!!!

Re: Spin-off to Pre-natal Vitamins
My dr. recommends "rainbow light" they are NOT prescription so they are a little more $ since you cant use your insurance to pay for them, but i found them pretty cheap online
regular CVS and Rite Aide stores sell their own brands as well
My dr. recommended me starting them about 3 months prior to TTC

Re: Spin-off to Pre-natal Vitamins
You can get a rx for pre-natals from your GYN if you want but you can also get them OTC. Some of the girls on here use the Target brand I believe. I can't recall the name. But I hear they are just as good as the Rx ones.
My pre-natals are prescribed. Primacare1 is the name. They rx is pretty $$ though. My gyn gives me 2 or 3 months worth of samples so I don't have to spend the $$.
I was told to being taking them about 3 mo prior to TTC.
As far as I know you don't need to switch to another type of pre-natal once you are pregnant.

Re: Spin-off to Pre-natal Vitamins
I take Primacare 1.....they are fine!!! No side effects at all. They dont even have that "vitamin" taste and they have the DHA in it which is very important.

Re: Spin-off to Pre-natal Vitamins
I started taking the CVS brand prenatals. I'd take either prenatals or a multivitamin with at least 400 mcg of folic acid 3 months prior to TTC. I switched to prenatals when I got a BFP, which has 800 mcg of folic acid.

Re: Spin-off to Pre-natal Vitamins
when we first started to TTC, my dr gave me a RX and said to start taking them the same time i went off the pill (about 3 months before we wanted to start trying)... once we got pregnant, he switched the RX to the primacare one- which was A LOT more expensive then then the original RX they gave me at first... im not sure what the difference was...

Re: Spin-off to Pre-natal Vitamins
Many drug stores carry OTC brands. I take the 2 step ones, not sure of the name from CVS.
It's best to start 3-4 months before TTC
