is this where i belong?

hi….my name is rachel…I’m not really sure which board I belong on, but here’s my story…i’ve had 2 m/c since January and saw my OBGYN Wednesday to “discuss my options”…she basically told me she couldn’t really help me and told me I needed to see an RE for testing…I’m a little nervous about taking that step, but I understand it’s for the best, it’s just a big thing to commit to and I’m scared….anyway, I am really not very happy with my OBGYN and plan to see someone different from now on…would you contact the new OBGYN first or the RE? this is all really overwhelming, you know?
The OBGYN I don’t want to go to anymore gave me some names of RE’s she recommends and I think I have it narrowed down to the reproductive specialists of NY in stonybrook. I noticed on my insurance’s website that one or two of their doctors are listed as OBGYNs as well as REs. Does anyone see them for both? Any input as to who I should request there and who I should avoid? I’m more comfortable with female doctors, but I am starting to see that going through this process I am going to have all kinds of people up in my business so I just need to chill out….any direction you can give me is really appreciated!

First of all, welcome!
Personally, I see my RE only, I haven't seen an OB/GYN in years. My RE runs tests, checkups, etc... same as an OB/GYN would and then some.
I'm sorry about your m/cs Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I've never gone through that, but know how devastating that must be for you. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I would make an appointment w/ an RE first and see what you think. Please don't hesitate to ask us any questions. This board is full of tremendous women, who are all very friendly, compassionate and understanding. Good luck to you!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am so sorry for your losses.Chat Icon
Your ob/gyn did the right thing to recommend you see an RE. I go to RS of NY in Stony Brook and am very happy there. You will see all the doctors there, they rotate between their different offices. If you want your initiall consult to be with a female, Dr. Cain is very nice. I understand being scared, when I took the step to start going to an RE I was devestated, but after my first visit I knew I was in good hands.
All RE's are ob/gyn's first, then they get more schooling and training to become specialists. You can't usually use them for both things though - the goal of the RE is to get you pregnant and then send you back to your ob.

Welcome to the board, it is an unfortunate group to be a part of, but everyone here is wonderful. you have found a great support system.
I hope your stay here is short.

Re: is this where i belong?

Actually if you are dealing with recurrent miscarriage you should have the recurrent pregnancy loss panel. I also urge you to see someone at SIRM as they are really the "experts" in NY on this area. Their website is haveababy.com. Have you had the basic testing done? genetic, thrombophilia etc?

Welcome and I hope your stay is a short one!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I went to Reproductive Specialists of New York (Stony Brook office) as well and I had great success and really, really loved them. I had Dr. San Roman as my primary RE and I was very happy with him. I found him to be kind and warm and really willing to spend time with you and answer all of your questions. They were really on top of my care and they were not so quick to just prescribe me Clomid and send me on my way. We explored all of our options and they were very thorough with their testing first so all and all I was pleased. After 3 months I got pregnant and "graduated" from there so I highly recommend RSofNY.

The one complaint that I do have, or rather the one person I will tell you to avoid like the plague, is Dr. Kristen Cain. I REALLY did not like her nor did my DH. She had absolutely NO bedside manner, she was cold, short, and terse, and NEVER put your mind at ease. She explained nothing and was quick to get on her way. Luckily I did not see her that much (maybe twice in all) but that was plenty. I know you wanted a female doctor BUT she's not the person you would want, at least in my opinion.

Lots of luck to you and if you have any other questions about RSofNY just ask and I will answer the best that I can!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You have come to the right board. The ladies here have been through a lot and can lend you some support and information to help you get some answers regarding your mc's. My RE is part of LI IVF. I see Dr. Brenner and his associate is Dr. Kenisberg. They have an office in Pt. Jefferson if you are looking for someone in sufffolk.

Thats so weird because I have never had a problem with Dr. Cain. I see her pretty often and she did both my IUI's. I wouldn't say she is a warm person, but I have never felt uncomforatable with her. In fact yesterday I had a whole discussion with her about baby asprin and she was very receptive to all my questions.

It's funny how one person could have a good experience and someone else not. I really just didn't care for her. She did my sonohistogram (water sono) and she was just so off putting throughout. I was in so much pain when they put the catheter in and I guess I was involuntarily "pushing out" the catheter as she was trying to get it in and she rudely told me to stop. As if I was doing anything on purpose!! But what really got me was at the end of the procedure I was already crying from the pain, she told me I had a fibroid BUT that it was in the "worst spot possible and it might be a real problem". When my DH asked what that meant she practically blew us off. Now I was crying more because of course I was thinking the worst and my immediate question was if it will inhibit my ability to get pregnant, will I have kids, etc. etc. My DH asked her if it's potentially a real problem to which she said, (and I quote), "If you didn't have problems then you wouldn't be here". But she said it so snotty and smirked and then literally walked out the door. Here I was crying already, you told us news that could have potentially been a real cause for concern, and she explained nothing to us and was nasty as if we were wasting her time. Anyway, sorry for the long post but that's why I don't like her. Maybe she was having an off day or something but she really bothered me. I'm kind of glad to hear that you had a good experience though, maybe she isn't the witch I thought her to be. Chat Icon
