I have to say I think that child was beyond even LISG. Most of the kids there were not reading at 8 months and wouldn't have been able to graduate from college at 14... Not that the children aren't brilliant and that it isn't a wonderful school, but I think genius like this girl's comes around extremely infrequently.
That does NOT mean that I agree that she should have been pushed through college at such a young age, etc., etc. While I am amazed at the level of intellect, I always worry about the social skills of a person that brilliant. Even beyond not having a "normal" childhood, I wonder if they have a difficult time relating to more average people... Random things I think about...
I am amazed by her brilliance, though!
I'm not sure I agree, LISG last I knew was set up to deal with children like this. One of the children I knew who attended tested at a genius IQ level, she was learning things well beyond her years but b/c of going to that school, she maintained a childhood, played sports like soccer and softball (and excelled in them too). It taught her that life is more than acedemics and that you need to be a well rounded human being.
Now it does sound like she did partake in some activities (ie. tae kwon do) but I still wonder about how much social interaction she was really getting. That's not the kind of sport you have to do with kids your own age. So again, she was involved with something that separated her from all the other kids.
I do, however agree, her brilliance, is that of which to be awed.

Here's my thing, for anyone who watches CSI Vegas, might know there were a few episodes witha child like this, granted she was like 12 in the show, but a scary thought none the less.
I think it is truly amazing when a child is this bright but who made the descision to send her to school that early? What kind of childhood is she going to look back on and remember? What about the usual stuff like prom, homecoming and school dances?

This is why my educator moms and I always say we wish for an "average" kid. As incredible as her intelligence may be, I feel its as much a disability as any other due to the social issues it causes.

I wonder if she has a hard time interacting with girls her age? Does she kick back with them and gossip and watch "Rock of Love"? KWIM?

That could be true--I don't know much about that school, but I think she might have been better off to still be the smartest kid at the smart kid school. She would still stand out & be advanced, but it would be more proportionate.

I agree 100% that she'd probably have been better off there. That wasn't clear in my post. I simply disagree with the notion that there school would be fillled with children at her level. (*I* got into LISG, and I sure was not reading at 8 months old and never would have graduated from college at 14!) True genius like that is very rare.
I think she would have been better off in that sort of environment than going to college at 10, though... I wasn't disagreeing there.
ETA - Then again, she seems to be a happy, well-adjusted person from what I've seen and she isn't my child... so I'm really not in a position to judge what would have been best for her.

Re: Check out the smart local gals we have!!!
Interesting article!
But, as a teacher, I worry about how she functions as a social young adult. Yes, it's great that she is so incredibly academically gifted, but smarts don't get you everywhere. In fact, studies show that most extremely gifted people are quote often socially inept or inadequate.
Does she have friends? Has she ever gone on a date? Does she chat on the phone with the girls? I worry that she is socially isolated... but who knows...

Re: Check out the smart local gals we have!!!
I was discussing this with DW tonight. Besides the "fun" social activities that she is missing, I think a huge part of "social education" is the interaction between peers, debate, discussion, etc. The best way to truly learn is to question things, bounce ideas off of others, etc. With her kind of pace, there is no time to invest in debate or discussion. It's all about memorization, and passing the next test. I learned more in HS and college OUTSIDE of the class than I did just listening to the professor and taking tests.

Re: Check out the smart local gals we have!!!
she was a regular with her mom at the library(where i work) when she was just a little kid. she'd come in and play games on the computer a lot. she was frighteningly intelligent! her mom was pushy to say the least and all that stuff with her pushing the NPT school district is true...guess it doens't matter b/c it is amazing what she is doing today. she looks sooo different too with her blonde hair!

"She started talking and reading when she was just 8 months old. She had elementary school finished at age 5."
I don't know how I'd react if all of a sudden one day my 8 MONTH OLD BABY began reading and talking to me. lol
DD is 8 months old right now and that would freak me the he!! out!
