So hybrid owners...
Tell me about your car!! I may be looking to get one by the end of the year. I was looking at the Prius and the civic.
So do you save that much? How do you like the ride? safety features? worth the money?

Re: So hybrid owners...
DH and I are weighing this option right now.
We both have long commutes. I am trading in my xterra within the next two weeks because the extra gasoline just isnt worth it.
I am probably going to get an Acura TSX or a Honda Accord.
DH is also in need of a new car (his is 8 years old already!) and is either going to get a hybrid civic or a regular civic. The hybrid gets 45 mpg while the regular gets 36 MPG. And the hybrid will run you about $22K, while you can get the fully loaded EX civic for about $18k. I dont think getthing the hybrid is worth it, the regular one gets great gas mileage (unless you want to get into the HOV lane by yourself!).

Re: So hybrid owners...
oh and about the Prius...DH and I went to look at one last year and there was a 2 month wait list at Smithtown Toyota. I believe KellyFG just got a Prius, so you can ask her if this is still the case

Re: So hybrid owners...
We have the Civic hybrid and love it. My DH drives it because he has a long commute to work....thank god for the HOV lane! It is great on gas.....I filled my maxima up yesterday and it cost $60. His civic costs $30 and that is with gas being 3.79 a gallon. It drives really nice and there is a lot of room. My DH is 6'3 and well over 200lbs. Hope this helps!

Re: So hybrid owners...
We recently purchased a fully-loaded Prius. DH is the primary driver of the vehicle and he loves it! Initially it was going to be his commuting vehicle, but he uses it all the time now!
ETA: DH is averaging 41/42mpg with the Prius whereas our Jeep Grand Cherokee was around 12 mpg.

I waited till the gas prices were at a lull in January when auto sales are also super slow & I shopped for a great price, I ordered mine with exactly the features I wanted & waited two weeks for it. I'm now getting between 48-51 MPG and I've been using the A/C a little. I LOVE going in the HOV lane, it saves me at least 10 minutes each way, usually more. I have been driving a small economy car for over ten years, my Prius is actually more roomy than my old car. I love the features & I feel safe in it. It has side curtain air bags, traction control, all the good toyota safety stuff.

Re: So hybrid owners...
Ok dumb question...
What is the deal w/ the HOV lane? Are you allowed to be in that lane if you have that kind of car? Sorry if thats a dumb question, but I'm confused.
UPDATE: I looked it up and answered my own question re the HOV thing. Not of any use to me (I never take the LIE to work), but pretty snazzy.

Re: So hybrid owners...
You get a tax benefit on the hybrid thing too...
BTW: I have the Acura TSX - while it's good on gas - it's PREMIUM ONLY!!! You wreck the engine with anything else. DH gets gas paid for by his company or else we'd be running out of this lease. I once tried to put 89 octane into the TSX and the mechanic at the station yelled at me. I spoke with Acura and it is premium only. It's not a cheap car either (we got the GPS so it's even less of a cheap car). It's a great and fun little car - but not economical by any means.
Believe me - if I felt it would benefit you - I'd sell you our TSX as it's becoming way too small with DH's job requiring all the stuff he has to carry around and with baby coming we are looking for options - I can't even get out of it anymore and DH bumps his head at least once a week. We do have someone interested, but our buy out is kind of high as well.

Re: So hybrid owners...
How about maintenance? Are the oil changes and stuff more expensive with a hybrid? And how long does that battery last? My sister has a Prius and I thought she said her oil changes and regular maintenance were more expensive. But she loooooooooves the car.

Re: So hybrid owners...
I can imagine the car taking more oil than any other car . It will definitely be a question I ask the dealership when I look.
clwp: Yeah, not premium gas cars for me . I have a hard enough time w/ 87 octane! Premium in Commack was $3.99 today...no way! Thanks for thinking of me though!

the Prius'don't qualify anymore, after a certain number of each model are sold the rebate ends.
So far I haven't noticed any difference in maintance expenses, but my car is only 3 months old.

Re: So hybrid owners...
mmmmm my prius
I swear I will never drive another car It's absolutely perfect for our needs.
It obviously gets great milage.... I average somewhere between 45-50 mpg. It's also quiet, the interior is the size of an accord or camry (it's not a compact!), the back seat has very decent legroom, the back seats fold down, so you can haul large boxes when needed....
The touch screen display is very comfy... everything is right at your finger tips... the keyless entry (a sensor you keep in your purse.. when you touch the door, the car disarms and unlocks... when you leave, you press the lock button on the door, and it automatically re-arms the alarm... golden) means I never lose my keys or lock them in my car accidentally.... great for absent minded people like me.
stability control is the best option! You begin to skid and it takes over... all of the sudden you're in complete control again. I got the 2007 touring edition (it has upgraded headlights, larger wheels, and upgraded shocks). At the time (nov 2006) there was a HUGE waiting list... and getting a particular color was nearly impossible.
I called up toyota north (in mt kisco)... fine it's a drive, but they sell the most priuses in NYS... so they had my black car with grey interior

Re: So hybrid owners...
oh, as for the oil, it's more $$$ becuase I think it requires synthetic oil....
I think it really doesn't add up to many $$, becuase unlike regular cars (oil change every 3k miles), the prius requires a change only every 5k... becuase of the electric motor
