Cat litter

My mom and dad went away for 5 days with some friends. Usually when they go away, their neighbors feed/change the litter box for the cats (3 of them). Unforutnately, their neighbors of 30 years moved to Florida last week. So, my parents asked me to take care of the cats for them. I woke up out of my sleep last night thinking about how I can't change the cat litter!!! My doctor said to stay away from cat litter, but that being near the cats is fine. Do you think I can still change the litter if I wear gloves and I cover my mouth with a wash cloth?

Re: Cat litter

I *really* wouldn't risk it. Can DH help you do it? Or a friend?

Re: Cat litter

i spoke with my doctor at length with this

if you wear gloves and/or a mask, you will be FINE! just wash your hands thoroughly afterward and don't touch anything before you do.

if these cats have been indoor cats their whole lives, their chances of having it are much less than an outdoor cat. in fact, many cat owners have already contracted it way before they are pregnant and then have nothing to worry about.

my cat was feral so i let DH change the litter. however, i grew up with 9 cats at a time in my house so the chances are that i've had it already. i HAVE changed our litter and just use gloves when i do.

Re: Cat litter

I would ask your DH or maybe a sibling to help you out. My DH is out of town for the next 3 days, he put out extra liter pans in the basement because neither of us feel it is worth the risk.

Re: Cat litter

Unfortunately, there is nobody else around to help out. My 2 brothers live out of state and their friends who are the "alternates" to the neighbors are on vacation with my parents! I talked to DH and he said that he would be able to take a ride over there once with me, but I have to stop by the house on my way to work/home from work so it is totally out of the way to go all the way back home, to go all the way back to my parent's house. Although, I think I'm gonna have to bit the bullet and take the trip back and fourth so that I can avoid the cat litter. It is the safest thing, I guess.

Re: Cat litter

I have a cat, who is indoor full time. I even checked her out for toxoplasmosis-she was negative.
I clean, wash, change her litterbox as needed when DH can't help. I wear gloves and then wash my hands after the changing. You'll be fine.
