Are there any early indicators of OHSS ???

I didnt have this last cycle -thankfully...This cycle my protocol was switched to Lupron/Bravelle/Menopur ...I am only on my 6th day of stims and I already have lots and lots of follies- a few of them are already at 12mmChat Icon ....The nurse called me yesterday to bump my Thursday apppointment to today because my estrogen was a little high- I asked what that meant and she said that I may have more follies growing then were seen on the ultrasound and she was right because today there were even more than yesterday...Now I was supposed to go back Friday and they called and left me a message to come in tomorrow instead...They seem happy with my progress- but I can't help but wonder why they have been so on top of me with appointments...So far my stim dosing hasnt been lowered or anything yet...I am tentatively looking at an ER of 4/24ish.....Are there any early warning signs of OHSS ??...I don't know much about it at all...Thanks !!!!

I am in the midst of OHSS right now after Follistim/IUI and I can tell you that the first sign was my estrogen going up to fast so my Follistim was lowered. I also started losing my appetite and feeling bloated and nauseous while stimming. I had a hunch it might happen and I was right. After the trigger and O it got much worse. I hope it doesn't happen to you. It's not fun. Try to take it easy and drink a lot of fluids.

Thanks Chat Icon ...So far my appetite remains in tact (what else is new LOL) and no bloat or nausea...How do they detect OHSS- through sonogram ?...Does it always mean a cycle will be cancelled if it happens or can it be put in control ?...Sorry you are going through it Chat Icon

I think that the only thing to do during stimming if they suspect possible OHSS is to lower your dosage of the meds or have you coast for a few days. I don't know what has to happen for a cycle to be cancelled because that didn't happen in my case. I am sure you will get some other responses.

Re: Are there any early indicators of OHSS ???

Once hyperstimulation starts there is no real way of stopping it. They've already stimulated the follicles so they can't stop them from growing. All they can do is monitor you closely and try to control new follicle stimulation.
OHSS occurs after trigger and ovulation - usually kicks in the day after retrieval. The only thing they may cancel is the transfer for two reasons. The first is that if you do get PG from the transfer, you will get much, much worse before you get better. The second is that it makes it a little more difficult to do the transfer when your follicles are so bloated.
As other posters have said - drink lots and lots of fluids, mostly Gatorade mixed with water....and try to take it easy.
Good luck!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I hope I'm just being over paranoid- I am going to ask them tomorrow why I am being monitered the way I am and if I should be concerned or not...I'm thinking that they aren't worried otherwise they would have lowered my stims already but I guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow and see what they say...Chat Icon

Make yourself as aware as you can of your body--- I had OHSS after my IUI in December... it wasn't pretty.Chat Icon
I just saw my dr. yesterday which was CD24 (and after I left my dr I got AF which made it CD1)... they called me to tell me my estrodial is at 2 which is where it should be and had me start 225 units of gonal-f last night... and again today. They want me to go back first thing tomorrow morning and I have a feeling it's going to be every other day if not every day up until my IUI... especially after how my body responded last round I think they're going to be extra careful this time around. They started me on the highest dose and will dial my dose down to try to prevent OHSS. GL!!!

Most likely it will be every other day, or every 2 days. When I stimmed last cycle, they had me every other day after the first 4 days on Gonal-F. The Doc said that once the follies catch on, they grow pretty quickly. I suspect that's the reason they have you on the Lupron as well, so that you don't over stim.

Re: Are there any early indicators of OHSS -Update 4/17

Well I went this morning and asked my Dr. point blank- why I am being monitered as closely as I have been so early in the game- She said that since my estrogen levels are a bit high and I have so many follicles they want to make sure none "take off" so they will most likely be seeing me every day until ER (I have been there every day this week)...Also that this is how they keep an eye out to avoid OHSS...And she also said it would be likely that my trigger will be Sunday w/ an ER of Tuesday 4/22 (which originally was supposed to be 4/24-4/25)...My DH is worried that the eggs wont be mature enough if it goes that early (nothing new with hime, he always thinks they do things too early for some reason)...I guess I'll just have to have faith in the Dr. Chat Icon

Have faith in your doctor that they know what they are doing! Chat Icon My last IVF cycle, I went every day for monitoring for 6 days leading up to my ER. I was at the point that I was looking forward to the ER so I could sleep!
