The way maternity leave works at my company is that you get 12 weeks from FMLA, meaning that your job is protected. The first 6 weeks is fully paid through short term disability. I called HR and told them I was preggo and they explained it to me. They told me to call back 4 weeks before I'm due to get the paperwork. I talked to a coworker who recently had a baby and she said there wasn't much to it - we don't have to make any choices or fill much out.

I just called HR and left a message -- I need to know more about short term disability and whether I have it (shouldn't I know that??) or whether I need to sign up for my own policy. My friend didn't have it and had to get her own policy.
Does anyone know how you would know if you have short term disability?

at my hospital, we have an fmla form from HR and a disability for from our union that I also got from HR. Now from what I understand I have 12 weeks of benefits paid by my employer and then I have 1 year of job protection but I have to pay my union dues and my benefits. I am taking 16 weeks total,as I went out early because I was high risk.

If you live n NY you get NYS disabilty but that is only like $170/week.
My job provides a STD plan & we get 60% of our pay for the length of the disabilty up to 13 weeks (after 13 weeks it becomes LTD). I have to take 7 days of sick leave before the STD will kick in.

I signed up for short term disability insurance at work back in September...just have to print out the paper work when its time and everything is all set.
I can stay out for 3 months at half pay and another 3 months at 1/4 pay...so needless to say I'm staying out 8-10 weeks.
