Re: Stony Brook Hospital
Really thats why I want to deliver there...the private room. I oh so hate hospitals, and I really dont want to share a room with anyone. What happened with Stony Brook hospital that you dont like it...if you dont mind me asking... I was supposed to deliver at Snt Catherines but I really am not a big fan.

Stony Brook OB in Setauket, Sayville, and Rocky Point. The doctors are O'Keefe, Porte, Lochern (may be on maternity leave), and Westerman (spelling may be off). They are great...I had such a great delievery.

I go to Three Village Women's Health as well.
I had a horrible experience with my first delivery at Stony Brook. The nurses couldn't figure out how to unlock the PCA pump (the method I was to get my pain meds in., after my C-section). I waited over three hours with no pain management after a c-section (intense pain for me....I'm allergic to morphine, so nothing in the spinal was given that would have any long lasting effects for pain control).
I also had many many many other problems with my stay at Stony Brook, and won't go into detail here.
However, that being said...I am delivering there again, because I really like my OB practice, and they ONLY delivery at Stony Brook. I'm hoping that because this is my second time around, things will go smoother (already had a consult with head of OB anesthesiology re: my pain management), and I am more apt to advocate for myself.

Wow..this is all surprising to me...and is making me rethink. I was really aiming to go there only for the private room, but I suppose I am just being selfish. My current OB delivers at Snt Catherines...and Im not a fan of the hospital from other surguries. Any thoughts on that hospital? Thank you all so much for this information!

St Charles is much better, St Caherines is not to bad either, y all time favorite is North Shore Manhasset or LIJ, top notch care, attention, security, cleanlines, professionalism.

Re: Stony Brook Hospital
My friend and aunt delivered at Stony Brook and really were not thrilled with the experience either. My OB's (Suffolk OB/GYN) deliver there and at St. Charles and I had NO interest in Stony Brook even though I live 2 min. away. My other friend and aunt delivered at St. Charles and could not say enough wonderful things about the place. When I visited them there I was impressed at how nice and cheery the maternity ward was. It was clean and didn't smell like a hospital. It just felt really nice. Stony Brook feels like a big institution of a hospital. I just am not crazy about Stony Brook so my preference is St. Charles and that is where I will be delivering.

Stony Brook Midwives
Used them, too -- loved them and Stony Brook. I loved having a private room and couldn't imagine it being any other way. Maybe you could tour a few of the hospitals before making up your mind.
ETA: Stony Brook definately is a big hospital, but it's also got the top NICU in Suffolk - there are trade-offs. But I really loved the private room -- I can't believe other hospitals don't offer them to all patients!

Re: Stony Brook Hospital
Like I said earlier, I'm delivering there.... well, as far as the hospital goes, I definitely know of the reputation it has.... I've known several people who had surgery there, and a good friend delivered there about 2 years ago.... Sometimes, nurses drop the ball... definitely... frequently becuase they are understaffed.
I am a bit horrified by the above post where they couldn't get their poop together to get the pain killers flowing after the c-section. that is a horrendous story.
For me, I guess I chose the known hospital... I know a good deal of the good, bad, ugly.
Like another poster stated, under the 'good' category is the top notch emergency facilities... if the poop truly hits the fan, I know that there are attendings who are completely current with the latest techniques... and the newest technology will be at their disposal. I guess that's why I am willing to put up with the bad, and a bit of ugly.
I frankly don't care about the private rooms..... I know, I'm wierd....

Re: Stony Brook Hospital
I also use three village women's health and love them. I delivered my dd at SB almost 2 years ago and had a fantastic experience there. I will be delivering DD #2 there again in August.
ETA: SB also has the NICU right there. For me that was a huge plus. God forbid something goes wrong my baby doesn't need to be transfered anywhere. I had a friend who went through that and it was really tough. JMO.

Re: Stony Brook Hospital
I delivered DD at Stony Brook last year and had a GREAT experience. Everyone was nice, everything went smoothly, I had a private room, the visiting hours are sooo much better than at St. Charles (and they don't lock the babies up during visiting hours), the in room dining was AWESOME..I think gained 5lbs just from eating there. I also like that they let you keep the baby in your room all night with you if you want. I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience there.
I personally can't imagine sharing a room with someone after having a baby. I know how many visitors I had and it could be quite chaotic having 2 sets of visitors in one room.
