going to be a godmother again - question about "proof" that I'm Catholic

My only other godchild was baptized more than a decade ago, at the church where I received all my sacraments. My nephew (and soon-to-be godchild) is going to be christened out of state. I know I have to provide some sort of proof to the church out of state that I am Catholic, but what exactly do I need? A letter from the church where I received all my sacraments? A copy of my baptismal certificate? (Do they need proof I was confirmed?)

I want to call the church where I received all my sacraments soon to get the process moving. They were absolutely awful with administrative things for my wedding and I want to make sure the correct info gets sent out ASAP.

Anyone know?

I think you need a church to say that you are a member currently.

That's not what they are asking for. They just want to proof that I am Catholic.

I believe it means you need to show your baptismal certificate.

This is similar to when I got married and had to show proof that I was catholic and did all my sacraments. Call up the church where you had yours done and ask them for an updated baptismal certificate. It will be your baptism cert. and on the back it'll list all your sacraments and show all the dates you completed them. The church usually stamps it.

That's odd. I have 3 god children and was never asked for proof. 2 are out of state.

call the church you received your sacraments from,.. they should be able to send you a copy of your certificate.

ooops i didnt see that you said you did that for you wedding.

to be honest I thin all churches are different. I didn;t have to prove anything for my god children's baptisms

Ditto. The church you were baptized in should have a copy. Or if your parents are like mine, they have one somewhere in a safe place.

You need a baptismal certifcate that is UPDATED... each time you receive a Sacrament (communion, Confirmation, Marriage) it is updated on the back of your baptismal certificate... regardless if you made the Sacraments at different churches. the church you were baptized is the "home base" in terms of records for you and the other churches should be reporting the Sacraments made to the first church and they update it on the original baptismal certificate.

This is what DH church requires, but you should ask the parishoners of your godchild's church to verify.

They may ask you if you are a good standing member of your parish though, but I doubt they will ask for proof.

I think you need proof that your received all the sacraments. I remember my church asking me this about my dds godparents.. they didnt ask for proof, just asked me if they did.

That is so odd..I never had to provide proof or did the girls godparents have to provide proof. I would say all of the above are probably proof enough. It's probably more of a formality than anything else.

Hmmm..... my first church looked in their computer if I was a current member. Since I'm not..... my church had all the old info in notebooks. Those black marble looking ones. I had to go there and they asked when I was baptised, they looked me up, couldn't find it, so then they looked up communion and found me that way (they also had the baptism date cross referenced in that book). I think it was all different books too. They typed out a letter. Never heard of an updated baptism certificate. Every church is probably different.

I was a godmother in January and they wanted proof that I was in good standing currently at a catholic church. It is strange that some want this and not the sacrements info. Anyone can join a church a be a member and get a certificate but you can't get a sacrements cert! I also had to go to a "godmother" class to prepare me for my role!
