So do we think Oprah's episode today will make a difference?

Now having seen this eipsode it got me thinking. There have been MANY debates on this board over the arguement for not buying a puppy from a pet store.

But now seeing what was on Oprah, do you think the people who think there's nothing wrong with buying a dog from a pet store will still feel that way?

I was thinking about this and sadly, I think while it may have stung now and maybe for the next week or so I'm not really sure it will really make an impact in the long run. I hope I'm wrong.

What do you think?

ETA: Unfortunatley there will always be some people who believe the pet stores that their puppies don't come from PM.

ANd I also think some people truly won't care. They want what they want and don't have the ability to control themselves.

See, that's exactly my fear.

I think you all have a valid point, but I think also that is why it is so important for those of us who were affected (or more affected) to take action to get these stores closed for good!Chat Icon

I hope it will. I think 1) people need to be educated and 2) we need to work to shut down puppy mills so that, even if people don't educate themselves, the puppy mills aren't in operation anyway.

I didn't see the episode but people were talking about it the HSUS pro bono awards ceremony I attended this week. There are a lot of attorneys working on this issue, including some who've started a class action in FL against a puppy mill.

ETA: Link to info on class action

That is awesome! Do you know of any atty's in NY that might be able to help on a possible project?

I know that HSUS has a department devoted specifically to animal welfare litigation, so I would start with them. They have their own staff but then a lot of private attorneys volunteer their firm's services to help with the cases.

I really think a lot of people were educated and had their eyes opened. I was ignorant about puppy mills until a few years ago, and I think most people really have no idea. If it changes the minds of a handful of people, I'll be happy.l

After watching the show and crying for an entire hour during and 30 minutes after, i personally wont buy from another pet store, BUT i still feel that those dogs do need homes. I still feel those pups need a chance to live in a loving environment. Who knows what some of the pet stores do with these puppies if they cant sell them and they get too big. There are some that will place them in homes but what about the ones who dont?

I think it will make a lasting impression on dog lovers. Many people have known for a long time that puppy mills are out there and no good but they keep buying puppies from pet shops because they feel like if they don't what will happen to those puppies. I'm not saying I agree with that but I do think thats how other people feel.
The difference that Oprah made with her show, in my opinion, is that now people have seen what happens to the dogs in puppy mills. Especially the mothers- I think many people will pass up the pet store puppy because of that. There is a huge difference between hearing something is bad and actually seeing the conditions those poor dogs are living in. I also think they made really good points about shelters and rescue pups.

Re: So do we think Oprah's episode today will make a difference?

I think the part that showed the HEALTHY, SWEET, PERFECT shelter dogs being put down will really hit home with lots of people.

I was crying my eyes out.

And my DH, the "dog person" was sitting there watching, very stoically. I've never seen this man cry about ANYTHING during the 10 years I've been with him. Whoops, off the topic! Chat Icon

In any event, I really hope that part, especially, will help people to see that when they buy a purebred dog, they are missing the opportunity to rescue one of these babies. Chat Icon

I think it will affect people now-I hope in the long run-but I really see people still buying from puppy mills b/c your heart wrenches at the idea of leaving that store

I know what you mean, it's sad for the puppies in the store -- but we also know what hapens to the shelter dogs... and the puppy mill dogs... there are many ways in which you can save a dog without supporting puppy mills -- and you still save a lifeChat Icon

I really do think this show made a difference - several people who make fun of me for being such a dog person called me and were so effected by this Oprah ep - including my parents - so even if she makes a few people think twice: bravo to herChat Icon

I think this show will make a huge impact on people's perception and understanding of puppy mills and pet store animals. Oprah is extremely powerful and when she turns her attention to something, millions turn with her.
