College Admission

Ok so I applied to a school to go back PT. I sent them my transcripts from 00 when i graduated from Suffolk. I didn't have the best grades, horrible actually but the last 2 years (yes I got my AA but I was there for 4 years working full time) I turned it around when I realized it actually mattered. So I was denied admission got the letter today. What do you suggest I do now??

Re: College Admission

I would speak with someone in the admissions office and see what they suggest.

Maybe you can take classes as a non matriculated student to get started and convert to a degree program after getting a couple of classes completed.

Re: College Admission

Where did you apply? Ask if you can meet with a counselor and figure out classes you can take at Suffolk that would apply to the 4-year degree program. Usually if you have a f/t semester there with a 3.0 or higher (or whatever), they will re-evaluate you and admit you. Or you can ask for a letter of admission saying exactly what GPA you would need for 1 semester to then transfer--we did that quite a bit, and had students sign a contract saying that if they got a certain GPA at Suffolk we would then admit them. Many of the SUNYs don't do non-matric admission anymore because there aren't enough seats to allow non-matrics to enroll. I think your best option would be to return to Suffolk for at least 1 f/t semester, taking classes that apply to the 4-year program. It probably won't even mean that you'll lose time if you figure out classes that you'd have to take anyway.

Re: College Admission

I would talk to an admission counselor at the school you want to go to.

From personal experience, I went for a second bachelor's degree. I did have courses from my first degree that were pre-reqs., but the grades were not high enough for transferring. I just re-took those courses and any additional first and second year courses that I didn't have for the major I wanted to apply for. I took these courses at a community college and then transferred to the 4 year school. This was what worked for me, but I did talk to several admission counselors at the 4 years schools I was considering about what I should do.

I think often times they do realize that you are coming back as an adult and are more serious. If they see a significant change in the grades, they do look at that.

Re: College Admission

I agree with the become a non-matriculated student and take some courses.

I had OK but not stellar grades as an undergrad (partially due to lack of discipline, and partially due to a couple pretty bad illnesses that I refused to disclose on an application). I KNEW I would be rejected from grad programs if I didn't show that I could get very good grades... I became a non-matriculated grad student, and took pre-reqs for the program AND some grad elective courses for the program. those classes showed that I 'matured' as a student as was able to handle grad school.

I got in....

That is good to know. I really didn't care when I got my AA. It was more of just doing it to do it. Now that I am wiser (I am NOT going with olderChat Icon ) I know what I need to do.

Re: College Admission

I work in college admissions...sometimes a letter to the Director will help. The Director can take a look at your file after explanation and possibly admit you on condition. Also call and make a contact, speak to an Admissions Counselor and see the reason for the denial.

I wish you Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. I'm considering going to grad school and I had terrible grades as an undergrad. Chat Icon That was 20 years ago, and I've been concerned about not being able to get in. I've actually been considering being a non-matriculated student in the hopes of it helping my application.
