Would you be annoyed?

A girl that I work with is an avid traveler... she goes all over to some very obscure places. Just recently to traveled to a 3rd world country and is back today, sick as a dog. She flew home yesterday but was detained at her first layover in customs because she was so sick on the plane... they finally said she was good to go after a few hours... Dr's said she *probably* only has a small parasite.

I'm thinking I don't want this girl anywhere near me? Am I being too paranoid, or is she being irresponsible??

I should add that when she does travel, she always drinks the water and eats the food knowing how sick she'll be when she gets back... she claims it takes away from the experience and its too inconvenient to take precautions like drinking bottled water only Chat Icon.

I think anyone who comes to work sick is being irresponsible.

Well, that's a given, but this girl is NOT sick with a cold... she's sick with something she got in a 3rd world country. She had to get a Yellow Fever vaccination just to be able to go... I'd prefer if she had the common cold. Chat Icon

I would be insane if she was near me. I don't blame you.

I'd go straight to Human Resources...she shouldn't be at the office - period.

Re: Would you be annoyed?

If her doctor cleared her to return to work then it wouldn't bother me. However, I would still be careful and keep my distance just in case.

Wash your hands GOOD, use hand sanitizer and do not rub your eyes, mouth, etc to be extra cautious.

well you don't know for sure what she has.

she was detained so she more than likely doesn't have ebola, yellow fever, dengue fever or anything else that can harm you.

third world countries get the common cold too Chat Icon and planes are no better for them either.

I don't think you need to worry too much. wash your hands, and keep your distance.

as for HER...SHE is not being smart at all. I can understand wanting to experience things...but she should care more about her health. I don't need to experience Montezuma's revenge to have a good time in Mexico Chat Icon

My dh's uncle (a doctor no less) died after contracting an illness while on Safari in Africa. He'd done it before...was with Doctors Without Borders before returning to his native Germany.....but decided on his last trip to sleep OUTSIDE the tent and under the stars.

well, as beautiful as that night must have been...he was bitten by something, got sick and was dead in two weeks. Chat Icon

She started throwing up the second she got on the plane to come home... 6 hours for the first leg. I asked her if it was worth it... she said absolutely.

That is sad about your uncle Chat Icon.. we really aren't invincible Chat Icon

Re: Would you be annoyed?

You'd think someone traveling to a third world country would take the necessary precautions to prevent illnesses, especially considering our immune systems aren't that resilient against a lot of the diseases found there. travel.state.gov is a good place to check out stuff like that about countries, and it takes only a few minutes to do. Those few minutes could be the difference between having a great experience in another country or in another country's bathroom.

As was said before, if her doctor gave her the ok to work, then there's not too much you can do besides keeping your distance when possible, and keeping your hands clean and away from your face. Good luck!
