Luteal Phase--Need help!
I really don't understand what the Luteal Phase is or how it connects to TTC. Can someone give me the easy version? How do I figure mine out?

Re: Luteal Phase--Need help!
There are basically two phases to your cycle. The first is the follicular phase. This starts the first day of your period. This is when your body is getting ready for ovulation - your ovaries are growing a follicle that will become mature and release an egg - ovulation. After the egg is released, you are in luteal phase. This is when your body is preparing to nuture an embryo - your progesterone increases, your endometrial lining thickens, your uterus becomes a comfy place for a baby should you have implantation occur. If your LP is too short, it probably means there is a progesterone problem. Since progesterone is very important in sustaining a pregnancy (it thickens the lining and suppresses the immunes system among other things) a short LP can indicate a problem in keeping a pregnancy.
If there is no embryo to support, progesterone levels drop off and your period starts, starting the follicular phase again.
HTH!

Thank you thank you thank you!!! That was really well put. So funny you should post this explanation today b/c my RE said something to me just today about how I might have too short a luteal phase and i was like "huh?" That post along with ohbaby08's post really clarified it. Thanks again

if you consistently have LP shorter than 12 days, you may have a LP defect.
If AF doesn't show then you may have had an anovulatory cycle. If AF rarely or never shows, then you may have an ovulation issue.

Re: Luteal Phase--Need help!
How do you know how long your luteal phase is? I'm not even positive when I ovulate! Should I get one of those monitors?

If you don't want to spend the money on the fertility monitor right away, you can chart your basal body temperature on fertilityfriend.com and that will give you a good idea of when you ovulate and calculate your LP for you.
