Honestly, I think it's pretty subjective and could be interpreted differently by different people. Here's the actual law:

§ 207-2. Unlawful Animal Confinement In Motor Vehicle.
A.No person owning or otherwise having possession, charge, custody, dominion or control of an animal shall place or confine such animal or allow it to be placed or confined or to remain in an unattended motor vehicle without sufficient ventilation or under other conditions or for such a period of time as may endanger the health or well-being of such animal due to heat, lack of water or such other circumstances as may reasonably be expected to cause suffering, disability or death.

B.No person owning or otherwise having possession, dominion or control over a motor vehicle shall place or confine an animal or permit an animal to be placed or confined or to remain in an unattended motor vehicle without sufficient ventilation or under other conditions or for such a period of time as may endanger the health or well-being of such animal due to heat, lack of water or other circumstances as may reasonably be expected to cause suffering, disability or death.

Good for you. I have called cops, tried to find owners myself, ran in & out of stores, etc to help a dog locked in a car. I also hate to see dogs tied up outside of stores. It is so dangerous for the dog.Chat Icon

I might get flamed for this but my dog absolutely loves the car and loves being in it. The second you ask him if he wants to go for a ride he starts doing laps around you until you get outside.

I will leave him in the car , weather permitting. But not for long periods of time. Maybe 10-15 minutes if I have to run in the store and get something real quick.

I would never do this on a day where it is too hot or too cold. I really dont think I am being cruel to him. He doesnt bark, just sits and people watches.

I really never thought of this as being cruel. I would rather get him out of the house for a lil while.

I agree. I always take my dog on errands on days when the weather is appropriate. He loves to sit and watch all the people go by. He never barks or goes crazy. I know tons of people who do this.
It is not against the law unless the conditions threaten the animals life. There is not much danger for a dog in car when the weather is mild.

Honestly, I do think it's a bit subjective. It's NOT saying you can NEVER leave your dog in the car, it says to me that you can't leave your pet or dog in there if it's going to cause it any harm (I.E. suffocate from the heat or freeze from the cold.). So stopping at the deli to pick up a drink for me and Arnold before we go to the park is acceptable.

At least as I read it.

i agree that a few minutes in mild weather isn't a huge deal.

but this was at least half an hour with one window cracked about an inch. it was about 50 degrees out and--put it this way--when i walked out of CVS and put my packages in my car, my car was hot and stuffy. that's what made me do something--if my car was that hot and stuffy, the dog had to have been hot and might have been having trouble breathing. it's amazing how at even 50 degrees, the temperature in a car can get much hotter, especially in the beautiful sunshine we had today.

i'm an animal lover. i know dogs love cars and i know most owners love their pets. but this was cruel. half an hour (at least) in that hot car with no ventilation or water is abusive. 5 minutes with all the windows cracked is a grand old time for a dog. Chat Icon but this poor thing cried for a long time...it was heartbreaking. Chat Icon

The above is correct.

It was approximately 50 degrees yesterday which means the dog was in no danger of suffering, disability or death. It could be a number of reasons why the dog was in the car. Go to vet, coming from vet, going to park, coming from park. The owner loves her dog and takes it with her everywhere, the dog loves car rides. On Friday I received a call from an NYPD detective asking for interpretation of law pertaining to dog license. Domestic dispute several days earlier and PD responded. Then Friday while female was walking the dog, male who was ordered out of house several days earlier approached female and took the dog forcibly. There are any number of reasons why the dog was in the car. If I were the woman and the officer was furious and may have yelled at me, I would have filed a complaint against him. It is a good thing for people to be aware of animals in vehicles, however, it was not warranted in this case.

i never said the officer yelled at anyone Chat Icon and this was today.

and it was DEFINITELY warranted in this case. i was there. i felt it. i saw it.
that dog was there for too long in a closed up car. completely inhumane.

and although i'm not a professional, i have performed dozens of animal rescues over the last decade. i used to know people at certain shelters by name, and they knew me and my family. i don't care what a law says--that dog didn't belong in a CLOSED up car for at least half an hour.

i don't know why i'm on the defensiveChat Icon Chat Icon that woman was wrong and i hope that the officer either gave her a summons or scared the living c rap out of her so she doesn't pull that again.

I did not say the officer yelled at the woman, I said if the officer yelled at me..there is a difference in the wording. And I do not know either why you are on the defensive. This is a public forum, we respond to the posts, there is no reason for anyone to be on the defense.

While it is great that you were concerned, truth be told, there was no law broken, dog was not in danger of dying due to suffocation. Having said that, if the officer did address the matter as though the woman was breaking the law then he was wrong and if it were me, yes I would file a complaint against him.

. i explained i didn't want to call 911 because it wasn't an emergency, but i was so worried about that dog.

Just a tip for future reference. You can find the non-emergency number for your local police department here:

Suffolk County's non-emergency number is 852-COPS
http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/police/phone.htm

Nassau's local precinct numbers can be found by clicking the drop down at the bottom of the page to this link:
http://www.police.co.nassau.ny.us/1st_pct.htm

Thanks for this I just put the numbers in my cell phone!!

My dog LOVES going in the car, and when I do take her, I never take her anywhere where I will be out of the car for more than 5 minutes at the most, usually not even that long. If I am going to grab some food, its drive thru. If I do have to stop, its at 7-11 where I park right in front of the door where I can see her and I'm just grabbing a cup of coffee or a soda, I'm out in less than 2 minutes. I can't imagine leaving her in the car for a half hour!!

To the OP: Good for you! This dog was in that car for too long, thank god he/she was ok.
