Has anyone else heard this about Spitzer?

I was told this at work and had no clue..

That he was trying to pass a law to allow full term abortions. And it also would make Catholic hospitals perform abortions and doctors to do them full term, even if they didnt want too.

I never knew that some states actually allow this, i was told California does. I just dont understand how they allow a woman to terminate a baby at 9m.. she will still have to give birth, so why not deliver the baby alive and give up for adoption???

I hope this petition gets dropped now that hes no longer around.

Anyone else hear this stuff?

I can't imagine they would pass that anyway. The thought of that is disgusting.

Re: Has anyone else heard this about Spitzer?

that law makes no sense. that would be the same thing as killing a full term baby.

most babies are viable after 24 or 26 weeks - that's only 6 months. i am 100% pro-choice but an "abortion" after that is murder, IMO.

i find it so strange that a law like that could even make it to a bill.

ETA: this does NOT apply to women who are induced to give birth to a child that would NOT be viable outside the womb. this also does not apply to a c-section or induction performed to save a woman's life - although i would think that if a baby can be retrieved after 24 weeks via c-section, and is otherwise healthy, the hospital should be under some kind of obligation to at least attempt to save the baby.

Thats exactly what i said.. how is it any different than the woman who kill the babies right after birth, or even later on.. I still dont understand it.

My coworker said it is able to be googled and have a site on it, the thought makes my stomach sick so i refuse to google it.

Re: Has anyone else heard this about Spitzer?

From the NY Times, last April:

"Mr. Spitzer’s bill, the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act, would update current law, which, for example, does not include a provision allowing for abortions late in pregnancies to protect a woman’s health. New York state laws on the books also treat abortion as a homicide, but with broad exceptions that allow the procedure in many cases.

Mr. Spitzer’s proposal would remove abortion from criminal statutes and make it a matter of professional and medical discretion. It would also repeal an old statute “that criminalizes, among other things, providing nonprescription contraception to minors,” according to the governor’s office."

This is completely false information. The purpose of the law would be to protect the right to an abortion-unrestricted before viability and only to protect the life/health of the mother after viability. The law also has some provisions regarding access to birth control and the morning after pill. No states allow a woman to terminate a normal fetus after 24 weeks. I think Kansas is the only state to allows it after that point and that is for life threatening cases or major fetal deformities which have to be confirmed. It is not possible anywhere in the US to abort a term fetus just because.

like i said, i found it stange that what was previously discussed would even make it to a bill. what you have stated sounds much more likely, and appears to have a sound basis in medical necessity.
