I want to scream!!

So not only am I having a difficult time with this cycle on clomid (progressing VERY slowly), but I just got DH's SA results and they're not as great as we had hoped for.

Can someone please explain this to me?

The doctor said DH had a normal count and his volume was good (a little on the high side) BUT he said the motility (movement) was 39% (should be about 50%) and the morphology (shape) was at 3% (should be around 9-10% at least). He wants DH to follow up with a urologist.

How "bad" are these results?

I am so upset - now we're dealing with female AND male factor - I can't take this bad news all the time.

I'm not sure about the numbers exactly, but my RE said that sperm counts vary from day to day and are sensitive to many different things that can affect them so they can change quickly.

When DH had a SA done initially the numbers were terrible, but the three times we've done the IUIs his numbers have been very good.

Maybe another SA would be a good idea to see if the numbers improve.

Thank you for responding Chat Icon
Do you think I should request another SA? DH was not really in the time frame for the SA analysis (it had been a bit longer than 7 days). Could that really affect the results though?

My DHs Morphology was 3% as well when he had his SA. My dr told us not to worry b/c the # could be affected by something as simple as DH being sick 10-12 weeks ago- which is affecting his sperm now.
Don't let this get you down yet. They don't even look at morphology for IUIs (not sure if that's the route you're going off the top of my head). Chat Icon

Thanks for the info.

The doctor did suggest that my DH see a urologist, so obviously he was concerned which worries me....He even suggested a urologist...

I think that's the general rule of drs though. Do you recall if your DH had been feeling sick a couple of months ago? It may be nothing, but I doubt that it could hurt going to see what a urologist has to say. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The IUI's can help out with mild to moderate MF issues. My DH's SA's change often and his motility hovers around 40% too.

Re: I want to scream!!

First I wouldn't go by one SA alone. Samples vary and going by one SA may not give you an accurate picture.

Second it's good that your DH's count is high......even if the morphology and motility is low it gives you a better chance of getting pregnant overall because of the count.

My DH has low count and morphology due to a varicocele. The only thing he has normal is his motility. I read a few places (don't know if its true) that caffeine helps with motility. I did find it quite ironic that the only thing not wrong with DH's swimmers was their motility and the fact that DH is a Red Bull/Monster/Coffee drinker.

Second the Morphology is low. There are vitamins to help with morphology which alot of times has to do with environmental factors and illness. Antioxidants are good and vitamins like COQ-10 and Pycnogenol are good too. Although we did end up having to do IVF (we have severe MF) DH's count did go up significantly when taking the vitamins. Good Luck!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I want to scream!!

IMO, even though the morphology and motility are a bit off, the count is normal. So that means that there may be a few screwy ones in there, but there are definitely plenty of good ones.

DH has had around the same numbers as your husband and I've gotten pregnant multiple times (miscarriage and chemicals, but that's because I have my own genetic issues).

Lots of luck to you!
