Re: Proposals at Weddings?

Why pi ss on someone else's parade? They didn't spend a gajillion dollars to see some other shmo get down on one knee and make that the most memorable moment of the day....

Re: Proposals at Weddings?

Our friend proposed to his girlfriend the morning of our wedding day. She was getting dressed and he turned to her and said "babe, you look beautiful, but I think today you should wear this."

They kept it from us until after the parent dances (we did it in the beginning) and he came over to tell us. I am someone who likes all the attention on me...but in the moment (and even 2 years later) I could not be happier to share in their joy.

We made the DJ make an announcement and we all danced together. It's a great memory.

It was! And if you look back at my old posts on LIW, I am SURE I said I would hate it...but I truly didn't. It's not tacky if it's done right. Chat Icon

Re: Proposals at Weddings?

My DH proposed at my brother's wedding. He did it quietly in the corner at the end of the night. We were living in separate countries at the time and we didn't see each other very often. He had come over specifically for the wedding and there was so much hubbub before that it wasn't ever the right time. We told my brother and SIL first and didn't want anyone else to know, but my mother asked brother and SIL and they said to announce it, so she told the band. It was fine and I don't think it took away from their day - in fact when I told my brother he said 'Now two good things have happened today'

I felt funny about it at first, but it worked out for us.

Re: Proposals at Weddings?

I would be annoyed but thats me.

other things wouldnt like at my DD's christening, DH's cousin announced she was pg with twins- I didnt care I was very happy for her.

but a wedding and a proposal- eh I dont think its right.
that is a very special day for the bride and groom- their celebration of love.
I know love is in the air but it just doesnt seem right. unless the bride and groom are ok with it.

I think it's very inappropriate to take the limelight off of the bride on her day (even the groom takes a backseat on that day... Chat Icon )

A proposal changes the focus to the "other" couple, and I really don't see that as being very tactful.... Chat Icon

I totally agree...

I wouldn't be offended or upset if someone had did this at my wedding.. but I am not most brides.

If I were getting the proposal - I would probably wish that he had chosen something a little more private and intimate. I am not the scoreboard or crowds type.

No matter where or when the proposal happens I am always going to be thrilled when 2 people that I love express a desire to be together forever.

Re: Proposals at Weddings?

I would be so embarrassed if DH proposed to me at someone wedding. I feel it is totally inappropriate.
That is the bride and grooms night, I would never take that spotlight away from them. JMO

So, if it happened at your wedding, what would you do?

call more attention to it, but getting annoyed at the propose. Or, say wow, that's great, congratulations and move on the next part of your day?

TBO I wouldn't even acknowledge it Chat Icon It is inappropriate and then next day I would say congratulations but not on my wedding day....My husband and I should be the only ones hearing congratulations on that day

Re: Proposals at Weddings?

I went to a wedding where this happened. There was a big plan. We were all told that the bride and groom were in on it, and that they were ok with it.

The plan was that when the bride threw the boquet we would let the intended bride catch it. And the oppposite would happen when the groom threw the garter.

Then the guy would get down on one knee to place the garter on the knee of his intended, but instead he pulled out a ring and proposed.

Everyone was really happy for them, but I found out years later that we were lied to!!! The bride (my cousin) was never in on the plan and was a little bothered about the whole thing.

Re: Proposals at Weddings?

I don't think that's appropriate. In general I don't really think it would take away from the bride and groom since that's why everyone is there (excpet for that bouquet/garter toss scenario).

But why wouldn't the couple getting engaged want their own moment? It's a big event, it should be their own time. I know I would be pisssed if I was proposed to at someone else's wedding. Chat Icon
