Who here has seen Jersey Boys?
DH took me last night- it was my xmas present. I'm a huuuuge theater person and he's not, so I chose a 'safe' show that I knew he'd enjoy as well (even though I'm more into traditional, 'heavier' shows).
What was funny is, he looked at the show the way I did! Made me pretty proud! I liked it and all- very entertaining and WOW the performers were incredible...they sounded amazing. But...we both wanted something 'more.' DH said after the first act "The music's great but....why am I here?" It felt like an excuse just to share their songs...and a little bit of their story. The 2nd act was better in that regard- the story really came out.
But DH likened it to a 'porno' (jokingly of course). It's entertainment, nothing more. Not much substance. I'd have to agree.
So...was anyone kind of disappointed after all the hype? Or was it what you expected?
It was what I expected so I'm not surprised....DH I think was. I knew what to expect going in since I'm such a theater snob . I would have preferred to see "Sunday in the Park with George." That would have been TORTURE for DH.

OMG, love you! I haven't seen it but I felt the same way about Moving Out - I'm a huge Billy Joel fan so I loved loved it, but like you when I go to the theatre I want a substance (even in Musical Theatre).
BTW - I saw Chorus Line on Bway yesterday and this production is fabulous. We must have crossed paths! I'm dying to see Sunday in the Park and Curtains now.

Get outta town!!! Where'd you go for dinner? We were at Arriba Arriba (our fave Mexican spot) on 51st and 9th.
I loooove A Chorus Line, one of my all time faves. Just haven't gotten around to seeing the revival.
If I never see Sunday in the Park I'm gonna regret it so...I better go soon!!
I never saw Movin' Out and I was sooo sad...but based on your review, maybe I didn't miss much!
ETA How'd you get to the city? Car or NJ transit? DH and I took the bus....

Tara, we haven't seen Jersey Boys, but we saw Sunday in the Park two weeks ago (when it was still in previews), and it was INCREDIBLE. You MUST see it -- absolutely not to be missed.

I guess it won't surprise you to know that we have the boxset of Sondheim DVD's and I watched Sunday in the Park last weekend when I was home sick. (I also saw the original production on Broadway with my parents and fell in LOVE with it ... I had to be the weirdest 8 year old EVER. ) I can't wait for you to see this one, so you can tell me what you thought. I won't tell you any more about it -- suffice it to say that it blew me away, and even DH liked it -- as shocking as that may seem.

OMG it DOES surprise me!! I almost never meet people into Sondheim unless they went to school for theater! That is SO COOL! okay it's freaky how much we have in common!
I didn't know there was a box set!!!! I have Sunday on DVD, and Into the Woods on video...and that's about it!!! I have to check out that box set!!!
I can't believe you saw the ORIGINAL!! You were ONE lucky kid!!! I remember the first time I watched the video I was bored to tears- and I had to be about 19-20. Then when I was about 22/23 I fell in love with it. I can't imagine how I woulda felt if I saw it when I was ten (when it was on bway originally)!!!
Aaahhh I have to go now!!! I'm gonna try for this Saturday night..all by myself if you can believe (There's only one person I know who 'gets' this show and she's out of town!)...even though I have to get up mad early the next day!!!
Thanks Steph!!!!
Oh Steph- did you watch Company when it was on PBS last week? WOW it was soooo amazing, Raul Esparza blows my mind!!!

Ok, first of all, you have FM. And second of all, of COURSE I watched Company AND DVR'ed it. We saw it when it was on Broadway -- INCREDIBLE. (DH was bored. sigh...) I also saw the 20th anniversary concert show that the original cast of Company did at Lincoln Center back in the early 90's. I LOVE that show too.
