Today's Oprah.. Trash picking in NY

I heard about this once before but I thought NY outlawed trash picking.

Re: Today's Oprah.. Trash picking in NY

Are they picking through a regular dumpster or one that is behind a grocery store or something?

It's called Freeganism. They are people that actually have money but are taking a stand against consumerism. It's really interesting...and a little gross.

No clue what this is. What are people trying to find in dumpsters?

freegans go to extremes to not spend money if there is a way to get what it is you need for free. They dumpster dive in food store dumpsters & get unopened food that was tossed by the store for whatever reason.
Its too extreme for me, I'd rather grow/produce as much of my own food as I can & buy the rest.
I do however love the concept of Freecycle, I've gotten things that have been great as well as given many things away so they don't go to the landfills.

Today's Oprah was very interesting and very enlightening. It made me stop and think about how I'm such a consumer and about the piles of stuff I throw away every day (barely-used papertowels, etc). Also, it's AMAZING how much great stuff is thrown out all the time....I say go for it (dumpster diving) if you can stomach it...I was amazed at the stuff they found that was fresh and still in its original packaging. I applaud people who can live like this.

Could not agree more (except the applauding people). I think Oprah did the show to push people to look at how much they waste which really hit home with me. However, I find it a little bazaar to go into a dumpster to get my food. Also, did you see them putting the fruit on the sidewalk afterwards. I would not eat an apple that was on the sidewalk...much less in trash. But I thought it was fascinating to see these people and what they are against.

Freegans? Never heard that term before! Chat Icon

good for them, if they can save something from filling up a landfill and it can take on a new life with someone else... why not.

Well if you knew what they used int he soil to grow the apples you might not eat apples at all, unless you are strictly organic.
