Re: fox 5 said the satellite has been
It's a bit freaky, knowing it was carrying such toxic stuff and was only 150 miles above the earth. WHere's that stuff going now?

ditto...so now there's toxic stuff flying around the atmosphere?
(I haven't really read up on this, so please forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong)

I don't love it, but I don't honestly know enough about what alternatives were available.
Couldn't they just change its orbit?

Re: fox 5 said the satellite has been
I read the story behind this. There was nothing the government could do and this was the best option.
The sattelite's computer failed shortly after it was launched so the government lost contact with it. However the engines kept running so it continued into space.
There were two options to correct the problem. Either do nothing and earth's gravity would eventually pull it and it will crash somewhere on Earth. Or they could shoot it down into much smaller pieces and the pieces would burn up in the atmosphere before reaching the land.
If they let it crash, it was estimated that it would destroy two football fields of land, and the toxic fumes would probably spread further. There was no guarantee it would land in water. What if it landed in the middle of Long Island?
They really had no choice. Earth's gravity is too strong to deflect it off orbit.
