How would you respond?

Ok, so I am officially giving up lunch dates with friends until after I tell everyone that I'm PG! I was out having a late lunch with 2 friends today, and they both order a drink with their meals and I order a seltzer with lemon. Well, they both looked at me like I had a second head growing out of my neckChat Icon So when it's time for round 2 and I order another seltzer, my one friend says to me, "why arent you drinking? What are you pregnant?" I didn't know what to say, so I just shot her a somewhat nasty look, of course confirming her suspicions. I would never deny it, but I am not ready for everyone to know yet - especially in the business I'm in everyone gossips like a hen-house! Why do people say/do things like this? If I wanted them to know I would have freakin told them!!!
Sorry so long - any advice on how to handle in the future?

Early into my pregnancy I went to happy hour. I went to the bartender in the beginning and asked for a drink that looked alcoholic but was not. She made me a cranberry, pineapple, and seltzer. It was really good and I told everybody it was a baybreeze. When I went upto the bar she asked if I wanted another "specialty cocktail". Worked at a wedding too.

Re: How would you respond?

That's a tough one. I'm a drinker too. So when I don't order a drink at dinner, the people I'm out with def know something's up.

We were trying to keep it (until it was confirmed by the doc) from my MIL and this is what I did that you can try.

Order a drink and then order another drink that is of the same color. For example order a sprite and ask the server also for a vodka tonic. you can switch it up without them knowing the difference. I've also ordered white wine spritzers with alot of ice and they have never known the difference.

If you are out on teh social scene, order your own drink at the bar and make sure to put a stirrer in it. I love cranberry and seltzers with lime. YUMMMMM

Re: How would you respond?

I don't why the nasty look - she didn't do anything wrong really. If you're normally a drinker, you need to expect that kind of reaction, and you should have a story ready:

-you drank too much over the weekend
-you're on antibiotics
-you gave up drinking for lent (if that applies)

or fake it Chat Icon

I know the nasty look came from shock and you automatically were defensive but I like the PP's examples.

Re: How would you respond?

i have never understood why people comment on other people's drinking/alcohol habits. it's such a loaded topic, never mind the pregnancy stuff. posters had good suggestions for excuses though.

Re: How would you respond?

I've done the bartender trick before and I've also done the antibiotic one as well. The bartender trick works well if you're just there for an hour or so. I would drink ginger ale in a glass and tell everyone it's a captain ginger-which is my drink. I asked the bartenders to put it in the same glass as they would a cocktail. Nobody even thought anything at all. Of course if you're sitting down with people you can't really do that so in that case I would say I'm on antibiotics or that I gave it up for lent.

Re: How would you respond?

frankly, that's why I didn't go to a family event recently.... I was 'sick'.

If they saw me not drink one sip, they'd out me ASAP. I debated the antibiotics excuse, but I think they'd figure me out... I 'm not a good liar....

Re: How would you respond?

I would just say "my stomach isn't really up for a drink today" and leave it at that.

Your friend was probably kidding around and meant no offense by asking if you were preggo. And it is probably the farthest thing from her mind.

I've been using 'detox' or 'health kick' quite a bit.

Also, I sometimes say I'm planning on going to the gym later on if we see someone in the afternoon.

We have one friend who kept pushing it - and DH was making over-elaborate excuses Chat Icon So I'm pretty sure we're going to get a 'we figured' when we tell them.

Re: How would you respond?

I think that's the first response from people when they don't see a woman drinking - "Are You Pregnant?"

I would respond that I'm just not in the mood for a drink right now...

Re: How would you respond?

All these are good ideas...but I just wanted to add a way to tell people you are pregnant-when you choose to.

I went to dinner with my 2 girlfriends on Saturday. I had told them I would drive out, so they could have drinks-this was back in January when we planned it. We sat down to dinner, we ordered drinks, me a coke, them 2fers margaritas, and wine. As we are all looking at the menu, my one friend Nicole says, Neener, you can have a sip of my drink if you want...to which I promptly replied, "Oh no thanks, I can't, I'm pregnant." It took them a couple of seconds for it to register, then they were were shrieking in excitement.Chat Icon

I love this!!!!!!!

I agree with the suggestions listed by other posters, and I think I would need to lean towards faking it if it were me. No one will suspect a thing and you won't need a poker face when questioned if you have a decoy drink.

Ugh- this was a tough one for me, too- because I was such a raging alcoholic.

But I would never deny being pregnant, I would always just laugh. Then maybe I would say- I'm trying to lose weight.
