Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are tolerant of other's beliefs?

If someone believes so strongly in something without pushing it on others - something that has no effect on any one else but goes to the core of that person and even perhaps defines some meaning in their life...why would another person want to break that down.
i think the flip side is that I can believe strongly that someone else is wrong, and have a right to that opinion if I don't try to break it down. As much as I think some people need to wake up and smell the coffee, I wouldn't try to mess with their establishments and beliefs, I just don't support them.
I agree that anyone is entitled to disagree and have an opinion...it's what you do with that view that defines the person. Breaking it down to me is belittling someone for their beliefs.
And I just want to make clear that in my statement it was more the beliefs of topic...nothing more like the topic of gay rights/abortion/ etc. It was more the - I believe in heaven type thing. Someone may not but I take offense in that person then telling the person that does that they are an idiot. Especially when that belief is their anchor though hard times. It hurts no one to believe in it. Hope that makes sense.

Somewhat. But some peoples beliefs offend me - anti abortion, anti gay rights etc.
Ah this is exactly what I was thinking with my response. Gay rights. Others that don't believe in basic human rights I inwardly cringe over.
Anti-Abortion advocates don't offend me in any way - and I am stricly pro-choice. They believe that life begins at conception...period. Therefore they are saving a life.
I believe differently.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are tolerant of other's beliefs?
I do not agree with extremists of any kind. However I do not seek them out & try to tell them I think they are wrong. Nor do I protest them or participate in any organization that condemns them. I just flat out disagree with believing in anything radically or in an extreme fashion, I think its a poor way to live life. and I'm reasonable enough to know that is only my opinion & may not hold water with anyone else. Even things I believe deeply in, like trying preserve & protect our environment-I welcome discussion & look to understand different points of view even if I don't agree. And I'm open minded enough to know that not everything I believe in is fact or law.
If that is intolerance so be it.

But maybe those same people that you do not share the same beliefs think you should wake up and smell the coffee. Who is to say that you are right and vice versa?
edited to take out "as".
EXACTLY.
And I am fine with that.
As much as people may wish it were contrary, NO ONE has a monopoly on truth. Except God. if you believe in god.

Yeah, but it depends on where you draw the line on whether something is private beleif and when it creeps into public realm, and what you consider harming other people to be.
Abortion and gay rights, and jihad are things that have a huge impact on other people, but there are smaller things too, like the role of women in the family, teaching religious beliefs in school, which may be subtler, but may also be very public and considered harmful

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are tolerant of other's beliefs?
I don't think being tolerant is equivalent to being a doormat or not speaking up.
I would say I am pretty straightlaced for the most part, but I do have a live and let live mentality for the most part and try to follow the golden rule. Even people who have beliefs that are very different from mine have a right to them.
If I disagree strongly with someone's views on something, i try to understand where they are coming from, rather than just try to dazzle them with how "right" my point of view is. I think being tolerant involves LISTENING to people and their points of view and sharing your own perspective. Ideally, both parties walk away better informed.

Definitely. I know each individual is entitled to their opinion. I also know that not everyone will have the same thoughts/cares/concerns/opinions as me.
I have little patience/tolerance for those who try with all their might to force their beliefs on others.
Me too. I consider myself very tolerant of different beliefs.

Absolutely. I respect everyone's right to their opinions and/or beliefs, even if I don't agree with them. I'm very good at seeing things from another person's point of view, and I like to try and understand where others' opinions are coming from.
