Don't waste your time dropping hints. Just inform him that Valentines day is this week and tell him exactly what you want him to buy.
Thats the only way that works for me. Otherwise I end up with fabulous things like a pillow you can plug an IPOD into

You can say to him when you are sitting around that you need a new bag and were looking at some online. Show him the ones you like to ask his "opinion".

or do what I do- which is taking it one step further
Buy it and give him the bill -

Men don't respond well to hints.

I told him that I saw the new line of Cole Haan at Lord & Taylor. He responded by saying that I don't need a new bag.
But, he is willing to buy me the Iphone if I want it?

tell him that you don't need the iphone (i'm assuming you want the bag more.) but you do need the bag. or tell him you need a bag to put the iphone in!

I'm just laughing at the fact that he is willing to spend almost $500 on the iphone which is cool but I don't really need it. I always need Cole Haan bags!
