My own unofficial study about HPT's
No, I am not TTC, but I do browse most of these boards out of curiosity and have seen a lot of posts about HPT's and I thought I would give my own input.
As some of you know, I am a nurse that works in a busy ER, and as a routine thing, we test every woman for pregnancy, pretty much no matter what thier complaint, and we also do beta HCG blood test for those with abd pain to rule out ectopic pregnancy.
I have been taking note of those who have negative urine and positive beta, and if any women with betas under 25 (which our urine tests read) are showing positive. This is by no means an official study of course, but if anyone would like, I will start to pay more attention and maybe write down what the urine results were compared to the betas.
Just the other day we did have a woman with an ectopic pregnancy, we suspected she was before we got test results, and since we are also able to use whole blood on our urine tests, I did that which gave me a positive. I tested her urine when I got a sample, and it was initially negative, taking more than 10 minutes to show positive. The urine was not diluted. Her blood beta was 80. She was 4 weeks from last period.
Another patient was a post-menopausal woman with a positive urine, beta read 4. She was not pregnant, postmenopausal women can have low level beta, and her's just happened to pick up on urine test. A different patient who was pregnant had a beta of 19 which showed a positive urine.
I have had a few patients with beta's over 100, one I remember specifically was 143 who had a negative urine test.
From my experience, betas over 200 always show positive on our tests, but some under that don't.Our tests are usually pretty good at detecting early pregnancy, but no test is foolproof. If you are testing before your period or just when it is due and you get a negative test, dont be discouraged, you just might get a positive after all!
