Hopsital question for the BTDT moms
This may be a silly question, but who changes the baby's diapers while in the hospital? In my hospital, they let the baby stay with the parents all day (and night if we wanted). How does the whole diaper thing work? Will they teach you if you have absolutely no clue how to change a diaper?
Also, what does the baby wear while in the hospital? Do they provide outfits, or do I need to wash stuff and bring it with me?
TIA! I'm clueless about this stuff.

While the baby is with you, you change their diapers (if your unsure how just ask one of the nurses I'm sure they will show you and they will also tell you what to do re: their umbilical cord), also in the hosp the baby wears a diaper and a hosp shirt and is wrapped in the the hospital blanket. I have heard of some people dressing their babies during their stay but I never did with my 3. You just need their coming home outfit.

You change the babies diapers. Everything you need is in the cart that they bring with the baby.
The baby wears one of the side button ts with the cuffs on the arms so that they don't scratch themselves.
Some people change them into their own clothes. I only put him in a really cute outfit that someone gave to me at the hospital one day -- the others he was in the hospital gear.
Oh - and they are always swaddled there in the hospital blankets.

Re: Hopsital question for the BTDT moms
I gave birth at NSUH- Manhasset and they were very helpful. If you needed help with something someone was always around. I had DD at 8:14pm so by the time I made it to my room it was after 11:30 and I was exhausted so I did not have DD at night. They brought her to me around 9:00am the next morning. They just kindof drop the baby off and she/he is yours until you bring them back to the nursery. Honestly things just come naturally.
As far as what the baby wears, they put a long sleeve side snap tshirt onesie on them and wrap a blanket around them. I didn't put my DD in regular clothes until the day she came home.

Re: Hopsital question for the BTDT moms
ok in my hosptial she stays with me 24/7 unless taken for the tests and bath. 2x total she is not with me for an hr. each time.
Hospitals provide a t-shirt with sleeves and the diapers/formula while staying. If they stay in the nursery they change/feed them. Unless you prefer to do it. I would actually check on this. Personally I would want to feed/change my own baby. I'm sure the nurses will be more than happy to teach you how to swaddle, change the diapers, feed and so on. that's part of their jobs. Also when you see the pediatrician while in the hospital they can give tips as well.
I brought clothes (gowns), full diaper bag (but used their stuff), my own blankets and so on.

Re: Hopsital question for the BTDT moms
Thank you for the info. For some reason I started freaking out about this in the morning. They never taught us how to change a diaper in our baby prep class. I guess they assumed it was easy enough. I'm so thankful there will be nurses around.

I didn't even know they came with instructions. I really need to meet more people with babies (who'll let me practice!).

it is beyond easy. Buy some diapers and practice on your husband. Open it up, lay baby on the back of it, with the middle meeting their crotch. Fold up front of diaper. Open sticky tabs on back and adhere to front flap. Repeat.

If it's anything like origami, I'm screwed.

Re: Hopsital question for the BTDT moms
You can definitely ask the nurses for help in learning how to change the diaper. I always recommend that you ask the nurses for help with whatever you have concerns about - ex: breastfeeding.
The hospital will have outfits for your baby. The side snap t-shirts are a great thing to buy for your baby to wear at home the first 2 weeks if you didn't want to put him in a onesie while he has his umbilical cord. They are also great because you don't feel tramatized trying to pull a shirt over the baby's delicate floppy head.
