Re: those that DIDNT get an epidural
Posted by DeniseMarie
i really dont want to get one. My sister has 2 kids and has 2 bad experiences with the epidural.
Her first child was too big to deliver anyway , she should have had a c section but she didnt. The epidural didnt work at all. So here she is expexcting to be relieved and still had horrible pain. On top of that m her insurance comp didnt cover the doctor who did the epi so she got billed like $2k for the balance. Ya - bc its her fault that he was te only doctor on call!
Her second child , they gave her too much. She couldnt walk for hours after ( I wouldnt like that feeling) and for days after she was getting severe headaches , very, very severe. She had to go back to the ER so they can put some of her blood in her spine to "patch up" the hole the epi left to relive the pressure. yikes
ok this just scared the $hit outta me but thank u so much the more info the better i need the worst to the best experiences to make a sound decision

Re: those that DIDNT get an epidural
I think i'm going to ask the doctor giving the epidural what his/her odds are first. Then i'll make my decision!
Otherwise i'd like to try to do it without it.

I am definately going to wait and see, not going in with anything set in stone. Plus after IVF needles no longer scare me You can't even see it going in!!

Re: those that DIDNT get an epidural
NO Epi...no time for it..no choice.
So, did I regret not getting it...I wouldnt know.
I had my DD in 10 min, 6 pushes and felt great afterwards.
BUT, there was a lot of pain involved....so we'll see what happens when #2 rolls around. Not pg, just when and if it does happen.

Re: those that DIDNT get an epidural
Posted by MrsBlueSash Believe me, you might want to just go with the flow, labor pain has a way of making you just wish for any form of relief, fear or no fear of needles.
totally agree. honestly - and please don't take this the wrong way - if i were you i would be MUCH more afraid of labor contractions than i would be of the epi.
i did most of labor without the epi because by the time i got to the hospital and got the epi it i was already 8cm dilated... and it HURT. i would have withstood ANYTHING to get relief from that pain, but as it happened, i barely felt the epi at all. best thing about the epi is that i got to enjoy the last couple hours of labor - DH and i got to revel in the excitement and anticipation without me writhing in agony...
either way you go, you will make it through and have a beautiful baby to show for it!

Re: those that DIDNT get an epidural
I didn't have an epi. I chose natural childbirth because I felt it was the healthiest way to deliver my baby. For me, it was a great experience because it's what I wanted and everything worked out for me.
Did it hurt? Yes. Was it unbearable? Not at all. I used self-hypnosis (google hypnobabies) and that really helped. I also had a midwife, husband, and labor nurse who believed in me and totally supported me.
As long as you have a reasonably normal labor, it is completely possible to go without an epi. I do suggest researching natural labor and looking into switching to a midwife if you reallly want natural childbirth, though.

Re: those that DIDNT get an epidural
No epi...as much as I wanted one. I got to the hospital too late. When the doctor checked me I was 7-8 centimeter...few min later...8-9..few min later ready to push....
3 pushes and out came Kara
I'm not gonna lie I screamed so loud the whole entire floor heard me. I think I have a pretty high tolerance for pain. My poor dad in the waiting room heard me. It hurt like hell. What hurt..all of it...the contractions...the pushing...Once she was out I was fine. Just very exhausted. I think if you get an epi you can really enjoy it a little more and really let everything set in.
When the 3rd baby comes I am not going to be laboring at home long. My doctor said the next baby I better be waiting on the curb as soon as I feel the contractions start.

Re: those that DIDNT get an epidural
the pain from the epidural was minimal for me...it felt like a pinch...and didnt even compare to the amount of pain I was in for labor....TOTALLY worth getting the epidural. Plus you cant see what they are doing which made a difference.

ok so im DEATHLY afraid of the epidural....sooooooooo i need to hear from the women that didnt have the epidural and their experiences in detail please, did u regret it or did u know it was the right thing for u?
i have had some bad reactions to anesthesia in the past and am also very afraid of the epi. that said, i think that if you are feeling you might not have it, it is very important to take classes or learn techniques in pain management. JMO, but the worst thing would be not having the epi AND not having another strategy for pain relief.
