Neutering
Where did you go to get your dog neutered?
How was the experience?
My vet gave me and estimate of almost $500. I know that's ridiculous, so I want to look for somewhere else to get him neutered?
Is it ok to shop around for this 
I'm really concerned about taking him to a reputable doctor.
Are the low cost spay/neuter programs any good? I'm not sure about them.
Please HELP

Go to the website - FriendsofAnimals.org
They will send you a list of vets who do low cost neutering in your area. Essentially, you pay them for the neuter and then take the certificate to the vet. The vet only charges you for meds on top of the certificate.
We used it to get Misty spayed - I think it was $75 at the time.

You can also type in low cost spay neuter programs on Long Island.
If you are in the five boroughs of NYC go to aspca.org..scroll down to NYC Sevices tab on that then you will see Spay Neuter Clinic Calendar on the next page. Also you can go to the Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals, Inc. and search for participating vets that do it low cost.
Shame on your vet for wanting $500, it is no wonder there are so many unwanted births.

There is some difference between the way that the private vets do it and the way that the spay-neuter clinics do it. I do not remember all the details. One of them has to do with stitches. I am sure that both methods are safe, but we had Oscar neutered at our vet's office. DH was a lot more comfortable that way and I was not sure what I wanted to do.

There are only two differences..one being the outrageous prices vet charge to spay/neuter and the 2nd is the sutures are absorable on spay neuter clinics...which is the way it should be...no need to go back to a vet to have removed.

Many do not know their vet participates in low cost programs. They will not divulge, you have to ask.

I researched it and found more differences than that. My husband just reminded me that there was a difference in how the actual procedure was done. We did not feel that our vet's price was outrageous, even though our vet is expensive for a lot of other services. Oscar had absorbable stitches when our vet did it. I am sure that my dog would have been fine either way. What is important is that we had it done.

Absolutely, the most important thing it was done. The ASPCA operates a mobile spay neuter clinic that is top shelf. If an owner can afford a private vet there is no reason why not, it comes down to personal choice. Unfortunately, not all can afford these to do so.

Ugh - I wish mine cost 500. We paid 900 for Abby to get spayed (but she also had an umbilical hernia that they had to take care of --- but still)

Wow, that is a lot of money. A spay does cost more than a neuter, though.

These types are surgeries are more invasive. Had the hernia been overlooked the result would have been tragic, it is basically life and death. Many vets go by weight of dog and cost of anesthesia..can they do it for less, of course, will they? More than likely not. I applaud the owner for spending the $$$ it truly was life saving.

my mom always used SpayUSA coupons for the neutering/spaying. i don't know how she got them or if it's still around but it was pretty cheap--around $50 for a cat. we never had any problems
