Allergies?

Is anyone allergic to their pet or have a family member who is allergic?

My 6 year old son has a potentially severe allergy to our dog - it literally came out of NOWHERE. We have had the dog for over a year with no issue until this weekend.

We want to keep our dog and (obviously) want to keep our son. We have an appointment with an allergist this week but I was wondering if anyone here knows what we can expect them to say.

Thanks!

Re: Allergies?

How can you guys be sure it is the dog? That does sound very odd after all this time.

To be honest, if the vet does allergy testing and can be sure it is the dog, the news would not be good news. So I hope that it is something else that can be avoided...

I am not sure of ANYTHING. My son was playing in the backyard and came in wheezing - he was having terrible difficulty catching his breath. His arms, neck and face were blotchy. We took him to the hospital - but by the time we got there he was FINE. They felt it was an allergy and did some scratch tests and sent us to the pediatrician. Ped said that the allergen test indicates he has an allergy to the dog and also to cats. But he wants to send Robbie to an allergist to determine if there was anything else that might have caused the reaction.

We had been keeping Robbie away from the dog.. but last night I caught him playing with the dog .. and he was FINE.

Ugh. I don't know!

Re: Allergies?

My guess is that it isn't the dog...maybe you have cats coming in your yard or it's something outside.
Either way, you are doing the right thing by taking him to the allergist and I'm sure they will narrow down what is going on.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I bet it isn't the dog. Maybe when they allergy tested him, he has a mild allergy to dogs or cats that you never knew and the + test is just a coincidence. I would tend to think if it was an allergy it would have happened since day one, and consistently (such as now he is playing with the dog and nothing happened). Maybe it was something in the yard. That really sounds more likely.

Re: Allergies?

We brought Tally home from a shelter a few years ago and I was horribly allergic to her- I was so miserable with sneezing, congestion, etc. I could barely breathe and I couldn't sleep from the congestion. Was weird because we have another dog that never bothered me!

anyway, I almost had to find her a new home until we tried a very expensive air purifier- and we shaved her (poor thing).

We haven't kept her shaved and over time we stopped running the air purifier-I think I just got adjusted to her.

turns out that my DH remembers that I was allergic to our first dog (she was his when I first met him) - also, it went away on its own and we completely forgot about it.

Anyway, the air purifier was SO helpful- hope your son is feelign well and it turns out not to be the dog!

I would agree. Maybe when the dog was outside something got into the fur that caused a mange that the pup may not have had before? If your son was playing with the dog the next night with no allergy then I would wager that it is not the dog itself, but maybe something that found its way into the fur.
