a cough that won't go away
I have had a cough since Christmas. On Monday I developed a low grade fever and runny nose so I went to the doctor. He gave me an antibiotic, something for the cough and the cough is still there. Is anyone else having this problem? Thanks...

I have had a cold since Dec 14. Goes from runny nose, to stuff nose, to nasal drip, then turns to a cough.
I finally took antibiotics this week b/c things started showing signs of infection. So that went away now that I am done with the abs but I still have this cough.
Coughs can be really tough and hang around a long time. Just so hard to sleep. I have been taking cold meds for too long now...
I hear ya. So annoying.

I was sick in Dec for 3 full weeks. Sleep and antibiotics were all that helped.
If the cough is not better in 3 or 4 days I would ask for a chest x-ray.

Do you have asthma? If so, it would be more difficult for you to shake it. I would go to the doctor.

I agree. I'm prone to bronchitis and pneumonia and have had lingering coughs too. Sometimes I needed two doses of antibiotics to get rid of it.
Take care of yourself and go back to the doc if the cough is not at least 50% better after 10 days of antibiotics.

Thanks so much for the replies. I am hoping I shake this and if not, I will go back to the doctor. It seems to have been around for a while. Hope you all are feeling better.

Yep. I am on my 2nd round of antibiotics (first round was in mid-Dec). Whatever I had apparently didn't fully go away. I've been on antibiotics since Monday, still feel crappy, called the Dr today to tell her, I though maybe this was viral & an antibiotic wouldn't help- she said stay on it- this "thing" that's been gonig around can last FOUR weeks!!!!

I know last year, I got a cold in November / December and the darn thing lasted 4 weeks. The one thing that lingered the longest (by about 2 weeks) was the cough. It was very frustrating.
If you're worried, ask your doc about a chest x-ray.
Mine wasn't anything serious, though, just REALLY frustrating to be coughing for weeks on end.

I did go to the doctor Monday and he gave me an antibiotic in case it was an infection, but no help. But I wanted to tell you that he told me to take Mucinex over the counter. Just in case maybe you want to try that.
