Maybe it's a CT thing? I went to a 30th birthday in CT and it was buffet dinner & cash bar, It didn't say that on the invite though.

Actually I think it may have just been an emial form her DH. ( It was surprise), but it was a real party in a restaurant & with her whole family & friends. They also aren't big drinkers.

IMO, an email from my friend's DH would have been better. Instead she printed invites, mailed them herself and now wants people to go.

Didn't mean to cause controversy and I know things are different in CT. I know that in many cases cash bars are common. but I kind of feel like if you are going to have a party, you should have a party.

I wouldn't invite people over my house without having something they like to drink on hand. JMO

Thanks for all of your replies.

Unsure if I am going to go because DH has to work. I don't think I am going to drive 2 hours each way alone.

At least she told you!! DH cousin's wedding was at a restaurant on the water in Freeport and it was cash bar. The invitation didn't say it. A lot of the men had to leave to find a cash machine and of course there was my SIL subtracting money from the envelope because she was upset that it was a cash bar.

Personally I am not a huge fan of them, to me if you are treating someone you do it all the way. BUT knowing that it's the norm outside of LI/NYC I would not be offended.

I agree her sending out her own formal invitations is a little more strange.

my very good friend just did something similar recently & it caused such an uproar. Personally, I don't drink so it makes almost no difference to me but I understand why its a problem.

I am sure someone will flame me- but I would never invite people to a party and expect them to pay for anything

it's not a party then

if you can't afford to pay for the whole thing at a resturant- you can have something at your house or a smaller party

but I guess she was letting people know ahead of time so they can bring money????

I completely agree with this.

me too.

I don't have a problem with it, I had a big party this weekend and we had a cash bar. I agree that oustide of NYS (probably just LI) this is completely normal.
