smelly fridge

we just bought a co-op (we do not live there yet) & the appliances that were left behind were pretty new so we figured that we'd keep them & just clean them. We started with the fridge, it smelled like fish. I took out all of the shelves & scrubbed like mad & left 2 open boxes of baking soda in it. Well, here we are a week later & I open the fridge & the horrible fish smell is still there. What do I do?

Re: smelly fridge

Sorry if this grosses you out but I would also move the fridge to make sure nothing died behind it. A dead mouse or rat may have a similiar smell, this happened to someone I used to work with.

Re: smelly fridge

Try putting in an unopened bottle of white vinegar. That is suppossed to help take away odors.

Re: smelly fridge

If you can unplug it and leave both doors open for a few days, and let it complete dry out, the cold sometimes tends to hold moisture and the smell could be laying in a place where you can't clean. Prior to plugging it back in, clean it again with a small amount of bleach diluted in a bucket of water, let that dry completely then turn on. Also, try to clean under the fridge, where the heat comes out of, sometimes things get trapped in there and the smell is getting blown in from there. GL

Re: smelly fridge

I swear vinegar and water cleans everything, somewhat. Try cleaning it with that and leave newspapers around the shelves. That should work.

Re: smelly fridge

You might also try putting a tin with charcoal in it. When we moved into our new apartment we had the same problem and that was the only thing that helped. We had tried white vinegar already and it just smelled like fishy vinegar!

oh no! If the vinegar itself doesn't work I'll try the charcoal.

just make sure not to use the match light kind because then your fridge will smell light lighter fluid!

If the vinegar doesn't work, definitely try the charcoal. One of the other usually gets out any smell.

I don't know if this will work as well, but I know when the microwave smells like popcorn, a half lemon in a bowl of water freshens it up. But I don't know if the heat from the microwave might add to the effectiveness. Might be worth a shot though.
