I just wondered...

I've been reading a lot of the posts on puppy mills and there are a lot of people with strong opinions on this.

I actually didn't know a lot about the puppy mill situation... I've recently learned about it. We got our puppy from a store and really didn't know about the background story of pet stores and we got slammed by some people about it. That's what made me look into it. Now I wouldn't buy from a store because I understand what goes on "behind closed doors" of pet shops.

My question... I am a vegetarian because I am passionately against the cruelty of factory farming which I felt was kind of on par with the same idea of treating animals as 'things' and as 'profit'... is anyone else concerned about the conditions of factory farming and that whole industry or do you consider it different? When I posed this question to one person against puppy mills and pet stores she said it was different ...and she still eats meat and doesn't care about the repurcussions of those
animals because they are food.

I think about this ALL the time. I started only buying hormone/antibiotic/organic animal products b.c they are supposedly treated better than non organic animal products. I don't know how true this is, but I have nothing else much to go by.

I want to become a vegetarian so badly, but just am so used to eatng meat and don't think I could live without eating it.

But I DO think about, whenever I am forced to eat something that is not organic or from a restaurant where I assume they buy the cheapest items.

And I do think it is on par with animals from puppy mills. Whatever we injest does affect our health, and even the fact that certain animals are treated inhumanely I think somehow affects us, even on a cellular or energetic level (if this makes sense).

I hate the whole situation to be honest and wish I could never eat meat again. But that will never happen, I give you much credit.

I also think about this constantly, and make very conscious decisions about what I wear, what makeup and cosmetic products I use, and what foods I eat. I was vegetarian for a long time, but recently I have had to add some meats back into my diet. I only buy organic meats from companies that are known and respected in the organic community. I do mostly eat soy replacements for meats though. I also only recently introduced milk back into my diet as well, since I have a HUGE issue with the dairy industry in this country...but that is a whole new thread.

Essentially the answer is yes, I think they are on par with each other and I do think about fair treatment to all animals.

While I am not a vegetarian, I do eat organic meat, milk and eggs. I also don't use products that are animal tested or have animal products in them.

I also feel it's one and the same. It's not fair to bash puppy mills while purchasing products from other animal "mills".

I could have written this. I too want to become a vegetarian, but I need to learn how to eat the proper amount of nutrients, esp. protein without meat.

I also try to buy organic, although I have a hard time finding these products at the local grocery stores. Where do you all get them?

Although I think that the food industry with its mass production is terrible and cruel, I don't think you can totally put it on the same level as puppy mills.

You are absolutely correct about puppy mills and farming. Chickens, pigs, etc. suffer short painful lives. I too am a vegetarian for that reason.

Both puppy mills and farming are EQUAL in cruelty.

I buy my meat at Whole Foods. It is expensive but I just have to. I also find other stores are now carrying more organic products. However, you can generally buy organic/hormone free milk and eggs in any store. Cage free eggs are found in any store.

I don't know if it is the same level as puppy mills, worse in some ways since we actually ingest the food. I have read things about eating animal products of animals in pain and being mistreated and that trickling down to us in an energetic level/sense. It is all very frustrating to me.

ITA! The way we treat animals in slaughterhouses and farming is deplorable and needs to change. I am not opposed to people eating meat at all but I do think we have a responsibility to treat all living beings with dignity.

I disagree and one some level think that factory farming in this country is worse than puppy mills. I never thought I could be a vegetarian either. I had grown up eating meat and was ridiculed when I told my family of my decision. Seeing documentaries like "meet your meat" on the PETA website and learning the cruelty and agony animals experience in factory farms and slaughterhouses put me over the edge. (Some animals are even physically and sexually assulted by workers before they are slaughtered) I realized that saying I couldn't do it was just an act of selfishness on my part. Anyone can be a vegetarian, even if you don't think you can, you just need to try and put animals' lives and welfare above your own wants. I won't say that it is was easy, but it is definitely worth it.

I am strongly opposed to puppy mills but have no problem eatting meat. I am funny about some things though like deer and rabbit... I can't bring myself to eat them... I guess because I've had pet rabbits and seen many deer.

Not sure about this but isn't there meat in dog food?

Not all dog foods have meats, but yes, most of the dog food brands have meat or meat by-products. There are organic and holistic dog foods though, that use organic meats in them.

Another good place for organic meats other than Fairway and Whole foods is Wild By Nature in Huntington, East Setauket and The Hamptons. They have quite a selection IMO.
